Sunday match cancelled [posted 08/06/18]

Sunday's friendly with Torrance CC has been called off.

Weekend action [posted 08/06/18]

This weekend's action starts at noon today with Shawlands Academy hosting Lomond School.  Then, at 6pm, the Under 14s play host themselves, Ayr the visitors on league business.  And Ayr are again the club's opposition on Saturday with home-and-away fixtures against the New Cambusdoon club.  Poloc are at home, Shawholm are on the road - both matches start at 12 noon.  Sunday then sees a Pro40 friendly against Torrance CC, start time 2pm, with the Panthers acting as hosts.  And then the weekend action finishes on Monday with both the Under 12s and Under 16s in action: the Under 12s go to Woodfarm Pavilion to play East Renfrewshire, whilst the Under 16s host Clydesdale.  Teams are online as players confirm.

Third group stage win in the McCulloch Cup [posted 06/06/18]

Weirs were the visitors to Shawholm this evening, playing their reverse fixture with the 'Loc in this season's McCulloch Cup group stages.  After winning the toss, Pasty elected to bat first.  The early loss of Jurie was a blow, however Saif (28) and Pasty (41) knuckled down and put on 56 for the second wicket.  Then, after Saif was trapped LBW, most of the rest of the middle order kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely, to see 132 for 7 eventually posted.  The Newlands' side's reply got off to a flyer when they came to chase 133 for the win, Butt bunting a couple of maximums over "cow" in the first three overs.  However Crazy Horse would dismiss him, enticing him to drain a catching chance to Jurie at long-off, who snaffled it.  This was the first of three grabs by Jurie in the deep, as the 'Loc kept taking wickets at just the right times to prevent their visitors really building up a head of steam in their chase.  Things still went to the wire however, with Jurie's two late overs (2-0-11-1) being crucial to Itty having 16 runs to play with in the final over.  And he kept his nerve, Weirs losing two wickets in the final six deliveries to see them finish 126 for 8, and fiving the 'Loc a 6-run win.  We've got the scorecard and updated stat's online, as well as match highlights.

A win and a loss in the Evening League [posted 05/06/18]

WDCU_logo On yet another glorious long summer's evening, the 'Loc's two Evening League sides were both in action: the Panthers at Hughenden, and the Academy hosting Ferguslie.  And once the skirmishes were over it was a win and defeat.  The win came at home, as the Academy defended 140 (scorecard), whilst the loss was suffered over in the West End, the Panthers allowing their Hillhead hosts to wriggle out of 13 for 5 to chase down the 112 needed for the win (scorecard).

Player stat's have been updated too.

Under 16s lose at Stenhousemuir [posted 04/06/18]

The Under 16s' league season finally got underway this evening, but ended in defeat at The Tryst, thanks in part to a mix-up over there being no retiral rule in this age-group league.  As it was the match was high-scoring, with the hosts' 140 being 18 runs too many for the 'Loc.  All ten fielders bowled for the 'Loc too, with only 'keeper Abdul not rolling his arm over.  With the ball in the first innings Hassaan's 2-1-1-0, Samee's 2-0-4-1 and Jamesy's 2-0-6-1 were the best bowling figures returned, whilst with the bat Hassaan completed a decent all-round performance with 25* (retired); Zakir (22), Abdul (20) and Nabeel (15*) also chipping in with contributions as the side ended up on 122 for 8.  We have the match scorecard online, and Under 16 stat's have been uploaded too.

Sunday League loss [posted 03/06/18]

WDCU_logo The Panthers lost out to Victoria at Bellahouston Park this afternoon, failing to chase 268 for the win and eventually running out 129-run losers.  Their hosts racked up the substantial 40-over total thanks in the main to splendiferous lower order bunting.  And then in the reply, despite three batters getting in to the twenties, none could go on and make a match-winning performance and the side struggled to create partnerships.  The scorecard is online, as are updated player stat's.

Two tons, and two wins [posted 02/06/18]

We're not sure how often it's happened before, but - as they say - if it has, it happened again!  Two unbeaten 100s by 'Loc players, one each in the Poloc and Shawholm matches.  At Torrance House Dr Uzzi led from the front, reaching 100 not out before a rain delay forced the sides off the ground, Shawholm having reached 277 for 4 and their innings then closing there.  Whilst at Shawholm Jurie recorded his second 100 of the season, and his first ever at home, scoring an unbeaten 148 as Poloc posted 282 for 4 batting first against Stirling County.  And pleasingly both tons were in winning team performances, Shawholm winning by 111 on DLS, and Poloc winning by 129 runs after bowling out their visitors for 153.  In the second innings at Shawholm there were "3-fors" for both Gary and Itti.  Well bowled to both.  So two tons, two wins.  #Toffee

We've got the scorecard from Shawholm online, as well as the scorecard from Torrance House, and the season's stat's have been updated.  There are also match highlights from Shawholm online.

Straight-forward win [posted 01/06/18]

WDJCU_logo This might've been the quickest junior league match of all time, the Under 14s' win over East Renfrewshire seeing them chase just 24 for the win, and doing so on the first ball of the third over.  Hasan and Hassaan saw the side safely home, their low target owed to the potency of the bowling attack.  Seven-player East Ren' won the toss and decided to bat first, however lost wickets quickly and regularly to see them bundled out for just 23 in the twelfth over.  We have the match scorecard online to look at, and the Under 14 stat's have been updated.

Weekend action [posted 01/06/18]

Today sees the start of another hectic weekend of cricket action.  Kick-starting with the Under 14s, who host East Renfrewshire this evening, Saturday then sees Stirling County visit Shawholm and Shawholm travel to take on Torrance House in East Kilbride.  The Panthers are in Sunday League action, taking on Victoria at Bellahouston Park, before the four-day cric' action frenzy finishes with two more junior league matches on Monday: the Under 12s host Stenhousemuir, whilst the Under 16s travel in the opposite direction to take on their Stennie equivalents at The Tryst.  Teams are online as players confirm.

Derby loss [posted 30/05/18]

The 'Loc lost out to Clydesdale this evening to go down to their first defeat in this season's McCulloch Cup group stage matches.  Batting first the side struggled for fluency with Rambo (23) and Coenie (23*) the only batters into the twenties.  However, the gift of 29 extras from the Dark Side allowed 113 for 7 to be eventually posted.  Enough?  Well it looked like it might be, despite some "lives" being gifted to the visitors from Crossmyloof, not least two run out chances horribly messed up, and 'Loc fielders doing that now-familiar conjuring trick of turning 1s in to 2s! And so it was that going in to the final third of the second innings Clydesdale still needed 64 runs from just 42 deliveries.  However over thirteen saw 15 plundered, and the pendulum had started to swing away from the 'Loc.  And it never returned.  25 were needed from the last three overs, but over eighteen cost 12, before nineteen went for 11.  And so it was that Clydesdale eased across a finish line that had looked a distance away only 25 minutes earlier, winning - five down - with six balls to bowl.  Frustrating.

Tonight's other result saw Weirs defeat West of Scotland and so the 'Loc remain top of the table despite their loss.  You can see the scorecard online, as well as match highlights.

Western Cup win [posted 29/05/18]

WDCU_logo Anniesland were the visitors in this evening's Western Cup group stage match, and were soundly beaten by Shawholm, in double-quick time.  The visitors, it should be said, only fielded seven players however, after having arrived with nine and two then leaving.  That aside, the Shawholm boys did a professional job, bowling out their opponents for 62, before chasing their target in under seven overs.

The scorecard is online, as are updated player stat's

Under 13s exit the ECB Cup [posted 27/05/18]

What must've been the youngest Poloc Under 13 side ever to take to the paddock, took on Carlton today in the ECB Cup.  Up against a strong, and much older, side, the young 'Loc players accredited themselves really well.  It was also a great experience for the youngsters who, in the most part, are playing their first season of hard ball cricket.  After bowling first they found themselves having to chase 198 to win!  Yikes.  However on the plus side, they took six Carlton wickets.  In their reply, the main plus points were Moiz's retiral-inducing unbeaten 32, and the fact that they batted their full twenty overs [Ed: senior Saturday teams, are you reading this!].  But in the end it was a hefty defeat, score-wise, but invaluable experience for the youngsters in all other ways.  We've the match scorecard online.

Representative selections [posted 27/0518]

Abtaha Maqsood was with the Scottish Women A team today as they took on Northumberland in Dumfries.  Congratulations to Abataha, and well done to the side who ran out eight-wicket winners.

Both Saturday sides lose [posted 26/05/18]

Today's league match at Meikleriggs, saw the 'Loc take on the division's early pace-setters, Ferguslie.  Unbeaten thus far, the Paisley side went in to the game as favourites.  However at 27 for 3, and 54 for 4, maybe the pre-match predictions would prove to be wrong.  But, as seven days previously against Uddingston, the 'Loc couldn't press home their early advantage and Ferguslie ended up posting 246 for 8, assisted by no fewer than 40 extras, including 30 in wides and no balls.  In the second innings, then, and again as like last week, a good start - this time chasing - was blown when 78 for 1 in the nineteenth over became 78 for 4, and then - after another horrible lower order collapse - 138 all out.  Result?  Defeat, and, unfortunately, no losing bonus points.

Also hurting was the Shawholm side's second thumping in a week.  After having to chase 306 to win at Bothwell Castle Policies a week previously and being skittled out for just 137, today the side batted first, only to be bundled out for a meagre 85 before Meikleriggs romped home inside sixteen overs.

Two big losses therefore, and both sides go in to matchday five with a one-and-three win:loss record, and now sitting in the lower thirds of their respective divisions.  Work to do.  We've got the scorecard from Meikleriggs online, as well as the scorecard from Shawholm, and the season's stat's have been updated.

Derby defeat [posted 25/05/18]

WDJCU_logo Tonight's Under 14 League match between the 'Loc and Clydesdale ended up being as high on tension at the death, as it had been low of quality throughout.  So let's go straight to the exciting bit.  In the crazy system that are the new playing conditions, the situation was this: the 'Loc had batted like diddies and were defending 75.  However the Dark Side decided to try and match the 'Loc's batting debacle with one of their own, such that with just one wicket in hand they still needed 9 to win.

Under 2018's playing conditions "last man stands" rule the 'Loc then had no fewer than eighteen legitimate go's at dismissing last batter Ferguson, only to concede 4 wides and a no ball, en route to a full-toss that was despatched for the winning runs!  Hmmm.  Anyway, it was cracking night, the ground looked great and in the end there was some excitement to offset the generally dismal technique on show.  An exceptions from blame is likely possible for Shahan who scored a nice 26 and then took 3 for 9 in his two overs, whilst Hasan returned bowling figures of 3-0-6-1.  We have the match scorecard online to look at, and the Under 14 stat's have been updated.

Weekend action [posted 25/05/18]

With the great weather continuing we're hopeful of getting five matches completed over the next four days.  Starting with tonight's Under 14 derby with Clydesdale that starts at 6pm.  Then it's Saturday league action, as Shawholm entertain Meikleriggs, and Poloc go to take on Ferguslie in Paisley.  Sunday's solitary match is an Under 13 ECB Cup match with Carlton, where a young 'Loc side will host from 2pm.  The Bank Holiday Monday then brings the weekend action to a close with the Under 12s welcoming West of Scotland to Shawholm.  Teams are online as players confirm.

Rowan Cup exit [posted 24/05/18]

Hamilton Crescent was the location for the 'Loc for a third evening running as the famous old west end ground hosted a Rowan Cup clash with West of Scotland.  Like 24 hours previously, Pasty won the toss and elected to bat first.  Also like last night the side got off to a fast start, 15 runs coming from the opening over.  Continuing the sense of déjà vu Saif would also be dismissed early, seeing Pasty in in the second over.  Coenie (30) and Pasty (60) would then add 40 for the second wicket, Coenie departing, caught by Fearn, in the ninth over.  Pasty then batted with much of the rest of the order, to see the side eventually post 126 for 9.  Not a bad target to set.  However it would prove far from enough as a poor fielding display would gift multiple lives to West's opener Naitram who'd steer his side home with plenty of overs to spare with an unbeaten 82.  He was dropped before he'd gotten off the mark, and was then dropped a further three times - mainly in the deep - and made the 'Loc pay for their generosity.  Aside Naitram's knock, Fearn chipped in with a chanceless 24, and it was these two who saw the hosts home in the fourteenth over.  So a comprehensive win/loss [Ed: delete as appropriate depending on who you are, dear reader!], with the 'Loc's fielding inadequacies cruelly exposed.  The scorecard's online, as are updated player stat's.

McCulloch Cup win [posted 23/05/18]

WDCU_logo The McCulloch Cup group stage matches continued this evening at a gloriously sunny Hamilton Crescent, and in a high-scoring T20 affair the 'Loc secured their second win in this round-robin stage of the competition.  Their win was largely down to Jurie's fireworks with the bat, his 100 coming off just 39 deliveries and including five 6s, more than one of which landed across the road.  Giving some company was Pasty, whose 24 was basically comprised of singles to get Jurie back on strike!

172 for 7 was eventually posted, Jurie getting out the ball after reaching his hundred.  West then made more than a fist of chasing their sizeable target, Fearn (45 from 30 balls) and Naitram (37 from 27) leading the onslaught.  Fearn in particular seemed keen on out-blasting Jurie, hitting three maximums, two departing Hamilton Crescent still going up!  But as it was 172 would prove 17 runs too many, and the 'Loc's hosts would finish 155 for 6.  The scorecard's online, as are updated player stat'sMatch highlights can also be viewed online.

Evening League double,.....defeat! [posted 22/05/18]

WDCU_logo

After Sunday's two wins, the Panthers and Academy sides came back to earth with bumps tonight, perfectly symmetrically both falling to seven-wicket losses.  The Panthers defeat came at the hands of a strong West of Scotland side, the Panthers' hosts chasing 131 to win.

Meanwhile the Academy's loss came at home, Hillhead chasing the lower target of 101 to win this one.

There were some highlights however, with Osman's 51 not out at Hamilton Crescent being one, and CJ's 33 (36) opening the batting at Shawholm being another.  The Academy scorecard is online, as is the Panthers 'card, with the stat's also updated.

Under 12s lose to Glasgow Accies [posted 21/05/18]

WDJCU_logo It was a bright, if not warm and sunny, night this evening at Shawholm as the Under 12s entertained visitors from the city's northside.  Glasgow Accies were the Under 12s' opponents, and in a match that saw nineteen wickets fall the 'Loc youngsters slipped to defeat to an older and physically bigger and stronger Accies.  There were plus-points in the loss, as always, however, with the side taking ten Accies' wickets, to Accies' haul of nine.  Then with the bat, there was a good knock from Abdullsubhan, whilst all the batters' calling and running was improved on seven days previously.

We have the match scorecard online to look at, and the Under 12 stat's have been updated.

Sunday League wins [posted 20/05/18]

WDCU_logo Both Sunday League teams were in action today, a young Academy side travelling to Renfrew with Coenie and Jurie, and the Panthers entertaining Clydesdale at Shawholm.  The Academy side ran out winners, thanks to runs from Coenie and Jurie who batted with the youngsters, the win being secured in the final over.   Meanwhile at home there was a derby win to celebrate as the Panthers secured 2018's first win over a Dark Side XI.  The Academy scorecard is online, as is the Panthers 'card, with the stat's also updated.

We also have a match report from the Panthers' match online.

Representative selections [posted 20/0518]

The club had three players in representative squad involvement today: Abtaha was with the Scottish Women A team as they took on Durham CCC; Craig Young was with the Western Warriors for their T20 Blitz matches against Eastern Knights and Caledonian Highlanders; and Samee Mehmood was in the Western Warriors Under 14 squad for their match against Caledonian Highlanders.  Well done to all three players.

Bad days at the offices [posted 19/05/18]

It was another double defeat day as both senior 'Loc sides lost to their Uddingston counterparts.  To deal with the easy match first: the Shawholm boys got their collective backsides skelped [Ed: a technical term!] as Bothwell won the toss, batted first, and racked up over 300.  Then in the reply there was a batting capitulation that was something akin to,.....to.....well, something akin to what was also going on in the match at Shawholm!  In this one, the 'Loc somehow managed to step on their Uddy opponent's throats not once, but twice, only to remove their boot and hand their guests from Lanarkshire the win.  Firstly in the first innings when, astonishingly, the side somehow managed to convert 163 for 3 in the 33rd over into 181 all out in the 42nd.  Now that's clever!  Then in the second innings, to show they could match with the ball what they'd achieved with the bat, the side then allowed Uddy to escape from 53 for 5 to win by three wickets.  Common theme to both matches, and both performances?  Inabilities to bat any lengths of time by the vast majority of batters [Ed: notes to selves - Saturday matches aren't T20s], and technical flaws being found out when it matters,.....in matches!  So a thumping, and a case of reverse alchemy.  On to next week, and, hopefully, improved discipline with bat and ball.  We've got the scorecard from Shawholm online, as well as the scorecard from Bothwell Castle Policies, and the season's stat's have been updated.  Match highlights from Shawholm can be viewed online, and remember, too, individual-by-individual playing performance stat's are online - they, eventually, don't lie!

Under 14s lose at Meikleriggs [posted 18/05/18]

WDJCU_logo The Under 14s got their league underway at the third attempt this evening, travelling to Meikleriggs in deepest, darkest Paisley to take Ferguslie.  Batting first the 'Loc's youngsters lost just four wickets en route to posting 120.   Under the new WDJCU league rules [Ed: devised by Professors of Complication at the University of Complication, in Complicationville] three 'Loc batters also retired having faced twenty deliveries.  The scores-on-the-doors showed four 'Loc batters got to 20 [runs!]: Hasan, Abdullah, Samee and Moiz.

In their defence of 120 the 'Loc started brightly, grabbing an early wicket, however - and despite taking six wickets - they'd end up on the losing side thanks, in the main, to self-induced pain caused by bowling wides, and two good innings from Mahapatra and Esakhiel.  Defeat was confirmed in the seventeenth over, Mahapatra pushing the winning single square of point to secure the win points for his side.  Ubaid's figures were the standout ones, his two overs costing just 5 runs, Hasan's 2 for 12 also being worthy of mention.  The scorecard's online, as are stat's.

Weekend matches [posted 18/05/18]

This weekend sees no fewer than seven scheduled matches.  The Under 14s kick things off with a trip to Paisley on Friday evening to take on Ferguslie.  Saturday's two senior mens matches see home and away clashes with Uddingston, the Shawholm side travelling to Bothwell Castle Policies.  Sunday is another two-game day: the Panthers hosting the Dark Side, and the Academy travelling to Renfrew. Then on Monday, the four-day schedule is completed by Glasgow Accies Under 12s coming to Shawholm, and the Under 16s opening their league campaign with a derby match at ToytownTeams are online as players confirm.

Greenwood Trophy advancement [posted 17/05/18]

The Panthers safely advanced in the Greenwood Trophy this evening, seeing off the challenge of BBC Scotland by 27 runs.  Assisted by BBC generosity in the extras department, 46 not out from Slappy on his first run out of a new season was the main reason for 122 for 7 being posted after Irfan had won the toss and decided to bat first.  This was then relatively easily defended, with Awace grabbing a "3-for" as the BBC Scotland reply ran out of steam to finish on 95 for 9.  The scorecard's online, as are match highlights.

Next up for the Panthers in the competition is Anniesland, on the 21st of June.

McCulloch Cup win [posted 16/05/18]

WDCU_logo The McCulloch Cup [Ed: formerly West League Cup] group stage matches got underway this evening at the second time of asking, the 'Loc making the short trip to Albert Park to take on Weirs.  Bowling first the side got the best possible start with a wicket in the first over, courtesy of a fine catch by Buggsy in the deep.  And this turned to be a sign of things to come as wickets just kept on-a-coming, the home side slipping to 76 all out.

Highlight of the bowling effort was Hasseeb's "5-for", with Pasty's two catches, run out and a wicket getting a mention in despatches.  The 'Loc's reply didn't take too long, despite three wickets going down, Jurie obviously deciding he wanted to catch the end of the Europa League Final, and bunting a quick-fire 47 not out from just eighteen deliveries to see the side home inside nine overs.  One over in particular saw Jurie flex his muscles, Ali being despatched for three consecutive sixes in an over that would go for 22.  Next up in the competition is West of Scotland.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and match highlights.

Panthers secure the bragging rights [posted 15/05/18]

Tonight's T20 between a Panthers XI and a Shawholm XI saw the former come out on top as 123 for 5 proved 12 more runs than the Panthers needed to see off their opponents.  The first innings total set owed much to two things really: the Shawholm XI's inability to avoid gifting runs in extras (19 in wides and 4 in no balls being "criminal"), and Abdul's late innings cameo that saw him bunt 21* from just ten deliveries to take his side's score past a-run-a-ball.  For the Shawholm XI, Mohammed, with figures of 4-0-11-2, again showed his prowess with the ball, and Habib (4-0-14-1) was economical enough.  In their reply, the Shawholm XI batters got off to a poor start, and were reduced to 5 for 3 three at one stage, Hunnain causing chaos with the ball, and batters unable to avoid getting out.  Hassan and Habib both joined the Webbed Feet Award listings, after Akshay (4) had been first out.  Humza (31), opening with Akshay, would hang around however, and hit two 6s in his 34-ball stay in the middle.  However his knock, and those of Gulfam (17 from twenty deliveries) and Noaman (33 from 28 deliveries), wouldn't be enough, as Hunnain returned at the death to restrict the lower order batters.  He'd finish with standout figures of 4 for 17 from his four overs, whilst The Enforcer lived up to his name again with a two-over opening spell of 0 for 2.  The scorecard is online, as are Poloc Panthers XI and Shawholm XI stat's, whilst the overall batting and bowling stat's have also been added to.

Under 12s get their season underway [posted 14/05/18]

WDJCU_logo The Under 12 season got underway today with the visit of the East Kilbride|Weirs combined side.  After winning the toss, Abdullsubhan decided the 12s would bowl first.  Taking four wickets, the 'Loc youngsters then restricted their opponents to 102 for 4 [Ed': or at least it's thought this was the score given the sheer complexity of the new "pairs-but-not-really-pairs" format.  Then in their reply, needing 102 to win, [Ed': or more, but not sure how much more, if wickets fell!] the 12s ended up 78 for 6.

And so, and please pay attention here, this resulted in a loss by 32 runs.  Nope, we don't know why either! Anyway, highlights on the night included a plethora of head-high beamers as the new 16-metre pitch was used for the first time, and a late finish given the requirement for overs with wides and no balls to see at least eight balls bowled.  More seriously it was good to see Aaitish make his competitive debut, good to see the sun shine and a good number of parents and families in attendance, and good to see the enjoyment that results from runs being scored and wickets taken! The scorecard's online, as are stat's.

Scottish Cup exit [posted 13/05/18]

If Saturday was a gloomy day, results-wise, then today's Scottish Cup exit at the hands of East Kilbride saw players being relieved of their belts and shoe laces.  In a reduced 38 overs-a-side affair, delayed because of soft bowlers' run ups, the 'Loc simply failed to show up, and - after being skittled for 121 - lost by three wickets.  Three wickets sounds close, however the truth is that aside a wobble near the finish line, the 'Loc never looked much like defending their low score.  All-in-all - and notwithstanding the glorious sunshine - this was a game to forget, and not one that'll see the club re-introducing turnstiles!  For the strong of constitution, the scorecard and updated stat's can be found online, as can match highlights

Double derby day defeat [posted 12/05/18]

This afternoon saw the first of season 2018's clashes with the Dark Side, Poloc travelling to Crossmyloof and Shawholm entertaining Titwood.  In the home clash, Shawholm gave themselves a decent chance of recording the win after dismissing their visitors for 162.  However a poor batting display in the second innings saw them slump to 117 all out, to lose - comfortably - by 45 runs.  At Titwood, it was the same story, by which your scribe means a failed run-chase after a toss win that saw both 'Loc skippers invite their opponents to bat first.  In Crossmyloof, however, the numbers were a bit bigger.  The Dark Side posted 251 for 7, before the 'Loc mustered 187 all out.  Individual performances of note worth mentioning in despatches would be Mohammed's and Aman's "3-fors" in the Shawholm versus Titwood match, whilst Jurie (47, and 3 for 38) and Coenie (67) get pass marks in the skirmish over at the Death Star.  So a disappointing day on the southside for the 'Loc, both sides at least picking up half-decent losing bonus points.  We've got the scorecard from Titwood online, as well as the scorecard from Shawholm, and the season's stat's have been updated.  There are also match highlights in the Video library.

Tomorrow sees the 'Loc with the chance to bounce back quickly however, as East Kilbride visit in the Scottish Cup.

Weekend matches [posted 11/05/18]

This weekend sees five scheduled matches.  The Under 14s kick things off with a trip to Kilmarnock on Friday evening, before Saturday's two senior home-and-away league matches against the Dark Side.  Shawholm host Titwood, and Poloc make the short journey to Crossmyloof.  Sunday's solitary fixture is the first round Scottish Cup tie against East Kilbride, at Shawholm.  Then on Monday, the four-day schedule is completed by Weirs Under 12s coming to Shawholm.  Teams are online as players confirm.

Poloc progress in the Rowan Cup [posted 10/05/18]

WDCU_logo Tonight saw cricket - finally - return to Shawholm, with East Kilbride visiting in the first round of the Rowan Cup.  In a keenly-fought encounter, the 'Loc would eventually come out on top, to win by four wickets with five balls to spare.  Batting first, East Kilbride posted 95 for 6, with Coenie (4-0-18-2), Pasty (4-0-13-1) and Hasseeb (3-0-8-1) being the main contributors to restricting the visitors.  Then in the run-chase, Pasty (40*) led from the front and saw the side across the finish line, and in to round two.

The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and match highlights.

The Academy open their Sunday League campaign with a win [posted 06/05/18]

West of Scotland were the Poloc Academy's opponents today in both sides' opening Sunday League fixture.  After losing the toss, Coenie's troops were in the field first up, managing to both take wickets at regular intervals and restrict the run-rate as they restricted their hosts to 101.  In fact the target might've been even lower had West of Scotland's final wicket not come after a tenth-wicket partnership of 32.  Standout performer for the 'Loc was Haider who, after three years inactivity, returned to cricket with a "5-for"!  Well bowled.  He was ably assisted by Kess (4-2-3-2), Habib (4-1-4-0) and Humza (3-0-9-2) who, opening up and bowling first change respectively, had set the tone for a good bowling display.  Mention, too, for Rambo who was 'keeping, and took four catches.  In reply, the Academy made light work of the run-chase, losing just two wickets en route to reaching their target in the fifteenth over.  Rambo (42) and Buggsy (35), who'd opened, had done all-but secure the win with their opening partnership, but departed in consecutive deliveries, to leave Coenie and Hasan to finish the job.

Under 15s lose to Carlton [posted 06/05/18]

ECB_age_group_cups_logo_2015 The Under 15s were in ECB Cup action this morning, in Edinburgh, against Carlton.  As usual when playing Capital clubs in cup competitions the match wasn't, of course, played at the opposition's ground, but rather at Inch Park, home of Edinburgh South CC.  The game also took place on an all-weather wicket, something relatively new for the 'Loc's youngsters.  Batting first the Under 15s started brightly, reaching 81 without loss with six overs to go.  However after Abdul (50*) retired, and Zakir (35) was diamissed, the rest of the top- and middle-orders failed to fire, and 111 for 6 was eventually posted.  In reply, the second innings was another "game of two halves", the Under 15s restricting their opponents to 41 for 1 in the first ten overs, only to then leak 71 runs in the next seven, as Carlton accelerated to their win.

The match scorecard's online, as well as the first junior stat's of season 2018.

Shawholm kick-off with a win, Poloc left frustrated [posted 05/05/18]

WDCU_logo Poloc were left stranded at Shawholm today as their home match with Prestwick didn't get started, the umpires determining that the run-up at the Burrell End was unsuitable for safe play .  There was better news from the mirror fixture at Henry Thow Oval however, as Shawholm got their 2018 season underway at last, and did so with a win, defeating hosts St. Ninian's by seven wickets.

Murtaza took a "3-for" as St. Ninian's were bowled out for 166, before Akshay (52) and Irfan (50) anchored a successful inside 36 overs.  The scorecard's online, as are the first Shawholm stat's of season 2018.

:: IMPORTANT :: Changes to junior and senior practice and training session timings [posted 03/05/18]

Changes are being made to the club's practice nights and times.  From next week - the week beginning 7 May 2018 - practice nights will now be as follows:

  • Mondays: open senior net practice (6.30pm to 8.30pm);
  • Tuesdays: coach-led senior training (6.30pm to 8.30pm);
  • Thursdays: coach-led junior training, all age-groups (Under 12s, 6.30pm to 7.30pm; and Under 14s and 16s, 6.30pm to 8pm); and
  • Fridays: open senior net practice (6.30pm to 8.30pm).

The rationale behind the changes include:

  1. Under 12 cricket matches are now on Monday evenings (whereas Under 11 matches were, historically, on Fridays);
  2. bringing together all junior practice on the same night will be helpful for parents who then only have to bring their children to practice on one evening, not two;
  3. having junior coaching and training on a night where there are no senior matches will help optimise coach numbers;
  4. starting all practices at 6.30pm allows additional time for parents/players to get to the ground after school/work/tea;
  5. moving to three dedicated time-slots for senior practice should assist accommodate the good numbers we have, and ensure players playing in Tuesday Midweek League matches can still practice at two dedicated times.

Junior matchdays are Mondays (Under 12s and 16s) and Fridays (Under 14s), and the ground itself will be being used most weeks on these weekdays, however there remains plenty room for net practice and fielding and fitness training at Shawholm.

Match cancelled/rescheduled [posted 03/05/18]

Unfortunately tomorrow's Under 14 League opener against Uddingston has been cancelled at Uddingston's request.  It has, however, been rescheduled for 10 August 2018.

Weekend matches [posted 02/05/18]

It's a busy weekend - leading to an even busier week - of cricket.  The weekend starts with the Under 14s opening this year's junior cricket league action, entertaining Uddingston at Shawholm.  Then Saturday sees home and away senior league matches against Prestwick, with Shawholm travelling to the Ayrshire coast, and Poloc hosting Prestwick.  Sunday sees two more matches, with the Under 15s provisionally slated to play Carlton in the Under 15 ECB Cup, in Edinburgh, and Poloc Academy going over to Hamilton Crescent to take on West of Scotland in the Sunday League.  The Under 15s' match is provisional, as Carlton are still to confirm a venue and start time for the match.  The team selections are online, with players' names being added as they confirm their availabilities.  Also selected are Tuesday's night's Midweek League sides.

Opening day win [posted 28/04/18]

After the day started with the disappointment of the cancellation of Shawholm's home match against Partick, it's pleasing to be reporting - come the end of day - on an opening day for the 'Loc, whose clash with West of Scotland at Hamilton Crescent both beat the weather, and turned in to a classic.  Complete with a century for Coenie, this match maybe saw the craziest or crazt finishes.  With the 'Loc's last pair in the middle and 13 needed off the final over to win, Immy decided to dispense with anything like making it into a last-ball thriller and proceeded to go 6 2 6.  Game over! Astonishing, and not least given both maximums were slog sweeps to a huge leg-side boundary!  201 for 9 beats 199 for 8, and - somehow - after being 30 for 4, the 'Loc had completed the most unlikely of run-chases.  Setting up the target of 200 had resulted from a scrappy performance with the ball, 24 runs in wides and no balls taking their toll.  There were "3-fors" for Jurie and Pasty, and Coenie's 10-3-16-1 was vital as exactly 4-an-over was established as the second innings winning run-rate.  And with Coenie smashing a 109-ball 105 that included no fewer than seven 6s, that crazy ending was set up.  Bonkers.  But a win's a win we guess.  West must really be wondering just how they didn't end up with the win in this one.  A cracking finish then, on a chilly day, and good to get a game in when most didn't.  The scorecard's online, as are the first league stat's of season 2018 and video highlights

Start of league matches [posted 25/04/18]

This week sees the start of outdoor junior training after a long winter indoors.  Monday night between 6pm and 7pm sees players aged 11 or younger (as at 1 September 2017) practice at Shawholm, before, on Wednesday, between 6.30pm and 8pm, players aged 12 to 15 will train.

Pre-season win [posted 21/04/18]

In what looks like being the only pre-season match to beat the weather, a Poloc XI defeated Dumfries at Nunholm today - in the glorious sunshine - winning by 102 runs.  Batting first on a remarkably firm and dry surface, the side posted 256 for 3 in their 40 overs, with Rambo top-scoring with 62, one of three half centuries (pictured below).  There were also runs for Saif (47) who put on 88 with Amaan for the first wicket, and then for Pasty (60*) and Coenie (54*), on debut, who put on 72 in just 51 balls at the end of innings.  Then in the field, the slow bowlers did most of the damage, and work, returning a combined 4 for 59 in their 24 overs, Crazy Horse taking 2 for 17 in his eight overs, and Coenie and Jurie getting a wicket each.  The scorecard's online, as are a short match report, the first stat's of season 2018. And, match highlights can be watched online here.

Games cancelled [posted 19/04/18]

Two of this weekend's second round of pre-season matches have, unfortunately, been cancelled.  Saturday's home fixture between a Shawholm XI and a Nunholm XI is off as the Dumfries club were unable to raise a strong enough side, and Sunday's Eric Lane Memorial Trophy match at Bothwell Castle Policies is also off as, like at so many clubs, Uddingston's ground is just not ready after the very poor Spring.

Weekend matches [posted 18/04/18]

This weekend sees three scheduled pre-season matches.  Dumfries host a Poloc XI at Nunholm on Saturday, with a Nunholm XI travelling north to take on a Shawholm XI.  Then on Sunday the annual Eric Lane Memorial Trophy match against Uddingston is scheduled, Bothwell Castle Policies the venue - by rotation - this season.  All matches, of course, are weather-dependent!  The team selections are online, with players' names being added as they confirm their availabilities.

Games cancelled [posted 13/04/18]

Unfortunately Sunday's pre-season game against Prestwick was called off early on Friday, the continuing poor weather resulting in season 2018's first casualty!  Then, on Friday evening, Saturday's trip to New Cambusdoon became victim number two, as this match, too, was beaten by the weather.

Weekend pre-season matches [posted 13/04/18]

Saturday and Sunday see - weather-permitting - the first two, of five, pre-season matches taking place.  First up is Saturday's trip to New Cambusdoon to take on an Ayr XI, before another trip to Ayrshire on Sunday, and a game against Prestwick at Henry Thow Oval.  Saturday's match has a 12 noon start and will be 40 overs-a-side, Sunday's match starts at 1pm.  The team selections are online, with players' names being added as they confirm their availabilities.

Pre-season ground clear-up day [posted 31/03/18]

A big thanks to those hardy, and committed, souls (pictured below) who braved the chilly and drizzly weather today to get through a mountain of work in preparation for a new season.  From stone and stick clearing, sightscreen pushing and mobile cover building, through skip filling and leaffe raking, to net bay weeding, net hanging and re-lining, the work party got through their "To do" list whilst groundsman Scott McCutcheon worked on the square.  In addition, special thanks to Andrea Young for the spring cleaning of the house in anticipation of Jurie's return, and Coenie's arrival in the next fortnight.  Thanks again to all those who came along.....some even stayed for a late afternoon net in the rain!
