Under 12s finish third [posted 30/12/13]

The Under 12s were in indoor Super 8s Finals Day action today, facing off against the Dark Side and Glasgow Accies.  The youngsters performed creditably, but came away win-less nonetheless.  Some run outs of the Keystone Cops variety put paid to any hopes the side had of managing to muster competitive totals, and this proved their undoing in both matches.  However the 12s can hold their heads up high seeing as neither the Under 15s or 19s made it out of their qualifying groups: well done to the youngsters, all of whom are still Under 11 age-group eligible next year.

TOPClub award [posted 30/12/13]

The club was awarded with its latest TOPClub certification today, the new certificate being presented - see left - at the Finals Day of the Under 12 indoor Super 8s tournament.

The club remains committed to its work with junior players - both in and outwith the club itself - and, along with its Clubmark certification, the TOPClub award reflects this.  Today's award is the latest, since the club first's certification back in 2005.  More about TOPClub can be found online

Indoor Super 8s, day three [posted 29/12/13]

It was third time lucky today in the indoor Super 8s tournament.  And after the Under 19s and Under 15s both missed out on qualifying out of the group stages, the good news is that the club's youngest side - the Under 12s - finally beat the NRR hoodoo, sneaking in to their Finals Day on Monday by edging out Ayr CC by this method, to win Group B.  They'll join the Dark Side and Glasgow Accies CC in tomorrow's final stages, playing the former in the first game at 10am.  Well done to the guys, and good luck on Finals Day.

Indoor Super 8s, day two [posted 28/12/13]

It was a case of deja vu today in the Under 15 qualifying stages today, with the 'Locster 15s losing their first game, winning all the others, and then being squeezed out of Finals Day by the net run-rate calculator.  Disappointing, and doubley so having beaten the group winners West of Scotland, to then miss out on NRR.  And how tight was the NRR loss?  Answer: very!  After the Under 19s lost out by just 0.08 in their quest to reach their Finals Day, the Under 15s missed out by the almost incredible margin of - wait for it - 0.001!  Likely the narrowest of margins, and coming down to, literally, 1 run across the three matches.

Indoor Super 8s, day one [posted 27/12/13]

The Under 19s were in action today in the group stage matches of the 2013 Indoor Super 8s tournament at Hutchesons' Grammar School Sports Hall.  In with Clydesdale, Ferguslie and Prestwick, the draw could've been kinder, but the 19s came out as creditable runners-up after wins over Ferguslie and Prestwick in games two and three followed first game defeat to the Dark Side.  As ever the games saw the usual crash, bang, wallop cricketing chaos as balls flew everywhere and individual and collective common-sense was left in the changing room!  Stand-out performer was Roberto whose three overs across the three games went for he-haw runs and saw him pick up wickets.  Ihty also bowled tidily, the others,...well...not so.  And with the bat, whilst there were cameos, no-one really got to grips with how to keep the scoreboard ticking over.  No retirals to report as a result.  In fact in the first two games - of the 42 balls the side faced in each - no fewer than 21 balls were dots, and that's actually pretty hard to do in the indoor game!  Game three - a thumping win inside three overs against Prestwick - did, however, see the team finish as runners-up and so await this evening's group stage games to see whether they progress to Finals Day, alongwith said Dark Side, on NRR.

Indoor Super 8s [posted 26/12/13]

The club's got sides competing in each of three indoor Super 8s age-group tournaments being played between now and the New Year.  The Under 19 group stage matches are being played this Friday, with the Locster 19s in a group with the Dark Side, Ferguslie and Prestwick.  Then, on Saturday, it's the Under 15 group stages, the 15s taking on Glasgow Accies, Hillhead and West of Scotland.  This leaves Sunday for the Under 12 group matches, with the club's youngest indoor eight-a-side team taking on Ayr, Ferguslie and Kelburne for a place in the finals.  The finals of all three age-group competitions - should any of our sides make it through their round-robin stage - are on Monday.  Teams for each of the days are online.

Joint statement by Cricket Scotland and the WDCU [posted 19/12/13]

The following joint statement was issued by Cricket Scotland and the WDCU today, concerning the organisation of cricket here in the west district of the country.  "One of the key elements of the national governing body’s current strategic plan is to decentralise the management of the domestic game, whilst strengthening the roles and responsibilities of the regional associations. As a major step towards this, Cricket Scotland and the Western District Cricket Union (WDCU) have recently concluded discussions and signed a formal partnership agreement. The four year agreement will start in the 1st of January 2014, and devolve authority across many areas to the WDCU in order to allow them to control and manage all cricket within the west of the country.  Discussions are also taking place with the East of Scotland Cricket Association (ESCA) and the league associations north of the Forth with the aim of setting up a constituted ‘Caledonia’ district. The aim is to have three fully functional regional associations, each with formal partnership agreements in place, by the end of 2014.  The key elements of the partnership between CS and the WDCU are that the WDCU will control all domestic cricket played within the WDCU region. The two organisations’ respective roles as these pertain to discipline, participation, player development pathways and structures, and regional representative cricket are also clearly set out in the agreement. Importantly, all clubs within the WDCU area will also continue to affiliate to both the WDCU and CS, and the agreement sees CS provide the WDCU with a finance package to support the delivery of their responsibilities under the agreement.  Commenting on the formal partnership with the WDCU, Cricket Scotland Chief Executive Roddy Smith was delighted with the progress made in driving forward the organisations regional agenda. "A key priority for Cricket Scotland is to strengthen our regional associations and devolve the management of the day to day business of running cricket in their areas to them. Our agreement with the WDCU is a natural progression for both bodies and we hope is a clear template to use in our ongoing discussions with the other regional associations. We look forward to working very closely with the WDCU in the coming years to drive forward the development of the game in the west of the country recognising that the local management of cricket against a national strategy is the best way to support all cricket in the region."  Sai Majeed, Chairman of the WDCU commented: "After concluding a historic partnership agreement with Cricket Scotland, the WDCU looks forward to an exciting and challenging period. The challenge will be to deliver a stable and successful format of league cricket after several years of change. We are confident the WDCU can deliver this with the continued support and understanding of its member clubs and together we can create a new vision of whole club development incorporating the existing WDCU landscape, which has been proven to be popular and successful. This transition will not happen overnight and will require the imagination and foresight of the WDCU committees to try and make it as seamless as possible in a demanding first season in 2014.  It is a great honour for me to be chairman of the WDCU at this historic moment, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Tommy Halpin for laying the foundations for this partnership with his tremendous efforts, and the incredible commitment of all the WDCU committee members to bring us where we are today. Cricket Scotland with Roddy Smith as CEO have made this possible with a support package designed to enhance cricket in the West and to take us forward to a new era of devolution."

Not again! [posted 10/12/13]

Despite the sightscreens being carefully tucked away behind the scorebox - you, you guessed it - they've been blown over again!  Last week's storm has toppled a couple of screens, luckily without any significant damage, either to them or the mobile cover frames one of them landed on.  The screens will, however, need re-erected and the plan's to pull them back upright this Saturday before or after the Christmas golf event.  Please try and get along to help if you can - exact details to come.

2014 Rowan Cup draw made [posted 19/11/13]

Tonight's WDCU AGM saw the draw for next season's Rowan Cup being made.  The draw, overseen by the Competitions Management Committee, saw the club drawn away against Prestwick in the first, the winner hosting either Ferguslie or Stenhousemuir in round two.  The draw means the 'Loc play Prestwick for the second time in the competition in as many years, 2013's first round seeing the 'Loc progress against the Ayrshire club in a first round match at Shawholm.

Jimmy Wilkie [posted 16/11/13]

The club was saddened to hear of the passing - yesterday - of Jimmy Wilkie.  Jimmy was a long-time - and honorary Life - member of the club, and was a regular fixture at "Shawholm" both during the cricket season, and throughout the winter months when the Golf Section played their games over the policies.  Our thoughts are with Jimmy's wider family and friends at this sad time.

A new winter golf season starts next Saturday with the playing of the "Mini-Masters".  Section supremos Messrs. Spence and McBride are keen to encourage as many members to play as possible, with seventeen confirmed golfers already.  If you've not played winter golf yet, speak to Brian or Charlie about getting involved.  The policies are in good nick, with the outfield now immaculate fairways and the holes being cut tomorrow by Ian Adshead.

Statements on governance of cricket [posted 25/09/13]

The club received communication from the Western District Cricket Union ("WDCU") today, commenting on discussions between it and Cricket Scotland ("CS").  The WDCU statement was accompanied by a CS one, and both are reproduced below.

"To all Club Secretaries and Contacts.  You may be aware that the matter of future administration of the regional conferences of the CSL is under discussion. More specifically, the WDCU is discussing the possible devolution of the administration of the CSL Western conferences, as well as other aspects of regional cricket administration and management, to it, by Cricket Scotland .  The WDCU Executive is continuing its engagement with Cricket Scotland on this issue in parallel to similar discussions between the national governing body and regional cricket associations in the Eastern conference areas.  Included within these discussions are the playing schedules of both the Scottish Cup and league conferences, including the number of competing teams and number of matches in each.  Nothing has yet been agreed in this respect, in either the Western or Eastern conference areas. Discussions, and possible outcomes thereof, are continuing in respect of participation in the CSL Western conferences for season 2014. Appropriate eligibility criteria will continue to be a key factor for participation in the various league competitions. We will communicate further with member clubs in due course, and expect to be able to provide further details at the AGM, which is likely to be held in late October/early November this year.  I also note below a statement from Roddy Smith at Cricket Scotland in relation to the above.  Regards, Mark Colman, WDCU Exec Secretary.

"CRICKET SCOTLAND STATEMENT:  Cricket Scotland and the WDCU have been working together in recent weeks to achieve a partnership agreement with a devolved structure covering all aspects of cricket in the West. Cricket Scotland has, for the last seven years, been pushing a strong pro-regional structure for our domestic game, from grass-roots participation programmes, through club cricket, to player development pathways and programmes.  This has included extensive consultation with member clubs and regional associations about league structures, and two years ago saw the formation of the CSL East and West leagues.  We are firmly of the opinion that this was the right move for club cricket and what has happened in the last two years has reinforced this view.  We fully accept that the eight-team regional divisions might not be ideal for all clubs but they were put in place as part of the move to the regionalisation of club cricket and have served that purpose well.  As the sport's national governing body it remains our role, when considering the structure of domestic club cricket, to look at structures that are best for the game as a whole, that will benefit more not fewer clubs, and that both will increase the number of people playing the game as well as assist with whole club development.  We remain strongly of the view that regionalisation, and with it the devolving of real decision-making to the regions, is  the best way to achieve these aims in this area. Discussions are on-going with the WDCU, ESCA and SPU  about regionalisation, Cricket Scotland's vision being to have strong regional associations responsible for running the domestic game in their regions, whilst working towards a jointly agreed national plan for the broader development of the game.  We firmly believe that local management of local issues is the most appropriate way forward.  Devolving of decision-making as regards the domestic game is a key priority within our current strategic plan.  It is also the national governing body's remit to invest in these structures, support the local delivery of national programmes and ensure that human and financial resources are in place to enable this to happen.  This would not change in a fully regionalised structure."

Dads win! [posted 08/09/13]

The first of what we hope might be an annual "Lads versus Dads" match took place today in glorious late Autumn weather.  First up a big thanks to everyone involved in getting the game on, including - in particular - organiser-in-chief Dave James.  Many thanks.  The match was a T30: 30 overs-a-side, no fielding restrictions and just The Laws to guide umpire Leitch.  After the toss it was the Lads, skippered by Lewis James, who were batting.  Lewis and Owais Shah opened for the Lads, Owais's dad Anjum opening the bowling for the Dads' side, skippered by Dave James.  And guess what happened in over one?  Yup, Owais caught Dave, bowled Anjum, 0!  Bragging rights to one dad in one particular household.  [Ed: it's gonna be a long winter Owais!]  This brought Pasty to the middle and so Youngy was thrown the new ball to open at the other end.  Anji and Youngy bowled in tandem through the first ten overs, but no more wickets fell, Beast and Pasty keeping out the good balls and keeping the scoreboard ticking over.  Ten overs gone, 46 for 1.  The second wicket would eventually fall in over fourteen, Pasty holing out to Anji in the gully off Mossy's bowling.  Moss had replaced Youngy at the Cart End, Pasty guiding a rank wide long hop straight into Anjum's hands.  66 for 2, Pasty out for 25.  Beast followed 2 runs laters to see the Lads slip to 68 for 3, bowled by Saleem.  The Lads now had two new batters in the middle: Stiffy and Robert.  And it would be Roberto who would be next out.  82 for 4, Rob' chipping tamely to Youngy at mid-wicket to give Stuart his first wicket.  And it'd be the first of three as Lads' middle- and lower-order batters struggled with the lack of pace of Stu's bowling.  And not just Stuart's bowling.  At the Burrell End, Jon Raine would cause chaos too, his even slower deliveries bringing him a "4-for"!  In parallel to wickets falling regularly however, Stiffy was accummulating runs.  He'd eventually be stumped by Spenny having reached 59, one of Jon's four victims.  In the end Joe was last batter out as the Lads posted 148 in their 30 overs.  Elliott's 59 was the best effort with the bat, Lewis's 37 and Craig's 25 being good supporting acts.  For the Dads, Jon's "4-for" and Stu's "3-for" were the standout bowling performances.  Saleem's 3-1-5-1 and Muhammad's 3-1-7-0 are also worthy of a mention.  149 to win.

The Dads' reply started with Spenny and Davie Armour.  And they'd make a good start, putting on exactly 50 for the first wicket.  Spen's wicket was that first one: caught at long-on by Pasty for 18 from 24 balls off.....Joe's bowling!  Davie continued to bat well after new partner Anjum joined him, and 15 had been been added before Davie was the second batter out, a genuinely good diving low catch at mid-wicket by Sohaib.  Out for 40 from 47 balls, and a second scalp for Joe.  Davie's departure brought Saleem to the middle and he opened his account with 4.64.  That's four-dot-six-four by the way, not four point six four!  Some things never change!  But too soon he had a new partner as Anji was beaten in the flight by a slower delivery and was stumped by CJ for just 2, the bowler bowling said delivery being Uzzair!  You couldn't script it!!  The second Dad dismissed by their associated Lad!  Now it was Saleem and DJ.  81 for 3 in the fourteenth over.  Dave and Sal' added 11 in just under four overs before DJ was run out by Pasty, Saleem not fancying a quick single.  92 for 4.  Then it was 92 for 5, Big Sal' becoming Lewis's first wicket, holing out to.....Kess!  He'd scored 20 from just 17 deliveries.  Again, you couldn't script it!  The Dads now had two new batters in the middle: Mossy and Youngy.  Ten overs left, 51 needed, five wickets in hand.  Mossy and Youngy would add 25 for the sixth wicket, navigating some overs from their off-spring along the way, Moss being sixth out, a second stumping for CJ.  Muhammad Maqsood was Youngy's new partner, and these two added another 21 in four overs, before Youngy holed out to a diving catch by Lexy running in from long-off.  He'd scored 28 from 28 balls.  145 for 7 and only 4 were needed to win, ten balls left.  But then drama.  The last four balls of Lewis's over were dots, and it was 4 needed from the last over.  Pasty bowling it.  2 runs came from the first ball, but then three dots,.....and a wicket!  Muhammad holing out to Robert.  2 still needed, 1 to tie.  One ball, Stu' on strike.  Drama indeed!  Pasty bowls it, field in, Jon Raine already running from the non-strikers end.  But Jon might've saved his legs, Stu' calmy clipping the ball against the spin through backward square leg for 4!  Dads win!  #Toffee  A great end to a good game.  Lots of Dads and Lads in direct opposition, and a good few household bragging rights claimed!  Thanks again to everyone involved. [Scorecard]

Under 15s lose in the dark,.....to the Dark Side [posted 06/09/13]

Playing_in_the_dark_at_Titwood

It was a website scribe's dream: losing to a club you refer to as the Dark Side, in the pitch darkness!  You couldn't script it any better.  And tonight's game really did finish in the darkness: played near the Toytown hockey pitch for floodlight benefits, with a pink ball to help it be seen, and with bowlers bowling off a few paces!  And here's a thing: it's amazing just how quickly kids can rattle through 40 overs when they want to!  Oh and did we mention it was also raining throughout!!

But - and whisper it - everyone enjoyed themselves!

To the game itself.  The Dark Side batted first and posted 138 for 8 in their twenty [Ed: yes, 20!] overs, none of the batters making a big score, but four getting in to the 20s.  A bit like the bowlers in fact!  All five conceded around 25 to 30 runs, Owais and Uzzair picking up a couple of wickets each along the way.  In reply, in the ever-darkening night sky, the 'Locsters struggled from the off, all that is except Lewis.  Beast was the mainstay of the reply, scoring an unbeaten 50 to get his name on the honours board again, the side ending up 78 for 7 when "Time" was finally called.  In the circumstances of near total darkness, Lewis's knock was pretty impressive.  The scorecard is online, as are updated stat's.

This Sunday - the 8th - sees the first playing of a "lads -v- dads" match at club.  Dave James has pulled together two sides for this grudge match, one a pro' team of true legends, the other a scruffy outfit of young upstarts.

Confirmed thus far for the legends are DJ himself, Spenny, Anjum, Stuart, Dave, Grant, Jon, Muhammad, Moss and Youngy, the upstarts being the offspring thereof! [Ed: for once there'll be no selection gripes then we trust!]  The match starts at 1.30pm, and will be 30 overs-a-side.

League win! [posted 31/08/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

The 'Holmboys' secured back-to-back league titles today with a comprehensive win at Whitehaugh.  Led by Scotty's and Flanners' first-wicket stand of 48 on a tricky deck, the side posted 142 batting first.  Flanners top-scored with 58, Scotty (20) and Maddy (15) chipping in.  Then, in the home side's innings, early wickets saw Whitehaugh slump to 17 for 4, Doogie tearing through their top order.  And they never really recovered, Doogie helping himself to a "5-for" as Whitehaugh were bundled out for just 43, and with the 99-run win came another league title!

Congratulations to Rusty, Saqib and all the players who've contributed to the side's success.

Meanwhile back at Shawholm, there was a last ball win.....unfortunately not for the 'Loc though, as Kelburne sneaked across the line, nine down, somehow scoring 67 runs in the last ten overs, and 14 off the last, to win by a wicket.  The 'Loc had posted 229 for 9 batting first with Carly (47), Pasty (46) and Abid (35) in the runs, but this turned out to be just not enough thanks to the Kelburne tail's resilence.  A great finish though, genuinely exciting, just a pity about the result that sees the side finish in sixth place.  Frustratingly a win today, with Greenock losing too, would've seen the 'Loc finish two places higher thanks to their better NRR.  Such are the small margins.....   Match reports can be found online (here and here), with the match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's being online too.

Teams [posted 29/08/13]

There are two matches involving sides this weekend, both on Saturday.  The two senior games see Whitehaugh host NVT Shawholm in the CSL First Division Reserve League in Paisley, a win for the 'Holmboys securing back-to-back leagues titles.  Fingers-crossed!  NVT Poloc, meanwhile, are entertaining Kelburne in the CSL Western First Division at home, both sides sitting comfortably mid-table, Saturday's winner more than likely ending up ahead of the loser in the final table come Saturday night.  All teams are online, as players confirm availability.

Centurions in action at Shawholm [posted 29/08/13]

The Western Union's "Centurions" side was in action this week, playing three matches against a Birmingham select side.  The first match, at Titwood, was a Pro40-type match, the second two games being T20s here at Shawholm, today.  Tuesday's Centurions were skippered by Craig Young, with Michael Allcock guesting for them.  Batting first the Centurions set the Birmingham boys a D/L revised target of 201.  Mikey had top-scored with 53 batting at five, Craig running him close with 49.  The Centurions ran out winners in this game, bowling out the tourists for just 116.  Then in today's two T20s, there were two more wins for the Centurions, Craig again skippering the side, Mike having to be content to being on the groundstaff this time.  Batting first again both times, the Centurions posted 123 in the first match, Craig - again at four - top-scoring with 43.  Birmingham ran the Centurions closer this time, ultimately falling short by 6 runs.  The final game, shortened to fifteen overs-a-side, saw the third Centurions win, again more convincingly to see them win the series three:nil.  At a presentation ceremony after the game, the event organiser David Lloyd thanked the club for hosting today's matches, the presentation of the ground being warmly commended.

A win and a loss as two more rescheduled games get played [posted 28/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 11s played the second in their back-to-back league derbies tonight, against the Dark Side.  Unfortunately the result went the same way as 24 hours previously, in other words the Dark Side won.    And worse than that the margin of their win was bigger as, for really the first time this year, the 11s seemed to forget that the secret to 11s cricket is not to get out.  They forget this no fewer than twelve (!) times tonight.  Ouch.

However better news reached the club from Hughenden where the rescheduled Under 13 match against the Weirs|Hillhead combined side saw a win, with three batters retiring (Uzzair, Abdullah and Aliyan, and Abtaha taking a "3-for".  Now that's better.....  There are match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's

Dark Side win in the first of the 11s' double-header [posted 27/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The first of back-to-back Under 11 matches against the Dark Side took place this evening at Toytown.  The good news is that the game was played on a ground of normal proportions, the bad news is that the Dark Side were victors on the night.  The margin of victory was 62 runs, both sides losing just the four wickets, but the Crossmyloof youngsters having the bigger hitters in their ranks.  1-0 to the forces of darkness therefore as the Rebel Alliance look to "welcome" tonight's host to Shawholm tomorrow night in the "away leg".  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Under 13s lose in the dark! [posted 26/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13s were in league action tonight, playing a rescheduled match against Ayr.  Starting after 6pm because of the delayed arrival of the Ayrshire youngsters, it was decided to play twenty overs-a-side nevertheless.  However with the game ending in near pitch darkness, and the winning runs seeing the ball quite literally disappear in to the gloom [Ed: the umpires decide by the sound it was probably a 4!], that pre-match decision didn't seem so smart!

As it was it was the 13s who ended up on the losing side, Ayr chasing the 114 they needed to win in the penultimate over.  Rorie had made the largest contribution to the 13s' total of 113 for 9, although Aliyan's cameo 19* was an impressive display of late innings striking.  Then in the second innings the game was finely balance pretty much throughout the eventually successful run-chase, ending as it did in the near pitch black.  A short match report, scorecard and updated stat's will follow as soon as possible.

Under 18s win at Whitehaugh [posted 26/08/13]

There was no scheduled Under 18 league match tonight so it was good to get the offer of a friendly from Kelburne.  The game was played at Whitehaugh, and was sixteen overs-a-side.  On another perfectly pleasant August evening, the game was a good run out for the 18s, and saw them notch up a win.  Batting first they posted 140 for 4, with Beast top-scoring with 34.  There were runs for Stiffy (30*) and Rosco (28) too, as well as what reports tell this scribe was one of the larger maximums you'll see on a cricket ground from Disk.  In reply Kelburne lost early wickets and struggled thereafter, finishing 51 for 7, Ollie grabbing a "3-for".  There's a short match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Tons of runs! [posted 25/08/13]

The Academy XI were up in Stenhousemuir today, in action in the Sunday League.  And on a glorious afternoon the guys cashed in with the bat - scoring a whopping 327 for 4 - before then skittling out their hosts - for just 51 - to record a 276-run win!  Astonishing.  Leading the way was Muscles who scored 146 in his first game back after a new job ruled him out of Saturday cricket - welcome back!

Beast (49*) and Rosco (35) were also in the runs.  Then in the Stennie innings it was Ahmed-Raza and Uzzair who stole the show, the two Under 13s returning a "5-for" and "3-for" respectively.  Well bowled! [Report] [Scorecard]

Back to winning ways [posted 24/08/13]

The 'Holmboys' bounced straight back from their defeat a fortnight ago against Meikleriggs with a convincing eight-wicket win over St. Ninian's.  Pleasingly it was anotheer youthful side under the tutelage of Messrs. Lauder, James and Flanagan that secured the win, first bowling out the visitors to Shawholm for just 119, before then chasing down the required runs for the loss of just the two wickets.  There was a "3-for" for the skipper along the way, with Saqi' and Beast getting a brace each.  Then in the second innings, an opening partnership of 95 between Rosco (45*) and Flanners (33) meant there were no nervous moments on the way to collecting the win points. Also registering an entry in the win column were the 'Loc who saw off Prestwick down at the seaside, winning by eight wickets.  Z grabbed a "5-for" and Carly three, before Pasty with 76 not out and Carly with an unbeaten 48 saw the guys across the finish line.

18s lose to Drumps [posted 19/08/13]

The Under 18s lost by six wickets tonight in their home match with Drumpellier.  More details to come, but for now we can say that after being 71 for 2 in the fourteenth over and looking like being likely to go on and post a competitive score, Stiffy's dismissal on that score instead triggered a collapse of monumental proportions.  72 for 2, 85 all out!  Ouchay!!  The phrase - though in the wrong context - "getting their ducks in a row" applied as four lower order batters returned to the changing room without troubling the scorers.  Drumpellier then chased down 86 to win in eighteen overs, this despite the dangerous Sabri being dismissed cheaply and the visitors being 10 for 2 at one point early on in their run-chase.  Ollie again led from the front with the ball returning figures of 4-0-10-2, but as soften this season, it just wasn't enough.  More details to come.....

Thanks! [posted 18/08/13]

A big thanks to everyone who chipped in and helped the club host another MurgitroydT20 Finals Day today.  From the likes of Kenneth Robertson, Stephen Brown and David James who put in hours in the days leading up to today to get the clubhouse in spick-and-span condition, through Carl and Mikey and others who were on ground preparation duties and coped admirably with yesterday's horrendous rains, and today's early morning task force of Dan, Anjum, Craig, Brian, Joe and Mikey, to everyone who was "on parade" whilst the matches were on, including Dan, Craig, Russell, Hassan, Mikey, Andrea and Laura, who helped with everything from scoreboard operations, through catering, to ground work.  A great team effort - thanks, and well done!

"Kwik Cricket" action [posted 18/08/13]

The Under 10 Blue Bat Brigade were at Kelburne's Whitehaugh ground today for the latest WDJCU "Kwik Cricket" festival.  Grant Cathcart was, as ever, in charge and reports for us.  "KC beat the rain this morning and the boys and girl done good.  The guys bowled, batted and ran like pro's to post three big scores and restrict their opponents in each of the three games.  The team beat the West|Uddingston combined side, Weirs and then Greenock, with ease.  And not one run out this week - way-hey!  I'm not sure what they all had for breakfast this morning, but I insist they have the same again next week.  Many thanks to Safder and Maqsood for transport services.  Next Sunday sees the last Sunday outing of the season at Stenhousemuir."

Hillhead win against the Under 15Bs [posted 16/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 15Bs were the only junior side in action this evening with the Under 11s having a bye week.  In a good game that ended with an exciting last couple of overs, Hillhead - the visitors - snuck over the finishing line to win by three wickets with three balls to spare.  The Under 15Bs had batted first and posted 94 for 6, thanks in the main to Roberto's 25, before good bowling and fielding helped contain Hillhead's batters and set up the exciting finish.  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

13Bs in big win! [posted 14/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13Bs had a big win tonight in their home league match with Kilmarnock.  Chasing a net 34 to win after restricting the visitors from Ayrshire to 93 for 12 (under the "pairs" cricket scoring system), the 13Bs then racked up a massive 254 for 1 in reply to record a comprehensive victory.  The only batter to get out was Abdul who was unluckily run out, but even he - along with all the others - made double-figure scores as the visitors' bowling took a bit of tap.  There's a short match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

18s lose at Ayr [posted 12/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13s weren't in action today but the 18s were.  The club's oldest junior side was on league duty at New Cambusdoon in Alloway against Ayr.  After leaving late [Ed: why was Haider in KFC at 5.30pm?] a consequential late arrival in Ayr saw the game reduced to sixteen overs-a-side.  The hosts batted first after winning the toss and posted 107 for 5 with Elliot Speirs top-scoring with 64, dropping him on 11 and 38 proving costly!  And in the 'Locsters' reply a steady falling of wickets saw no real momentum built up and though Owais batted through for 28, the 18s ended up 14 runs short, six down.

There's a short match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Thumped and strangled [posted 10/08/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

The 'Holmboys' long unbeaten league winning run finally ended today at home to Meikleriggs,.....and how!  88 all out and their oppo' chasing down the required 89 to win before drinks!  Ouch!  Let's hope it's just a blip, albeit a sore one to take.  The win by Meikleriggs narrows the gap at the top of the table too, as the Paisley side are sitting, tucked-in, in second place behind the 'Holmboys and so any more slip-ups and the league title will go right to the wire.  Over in Paisley meanwhile the 'Loc looked odds-on to chase down the 199 they needed to secure another league win, being in charge of the game against Ferguslie for the larger part of the match.  With just three wickets down, and Carly and Pasty batting well the equation was that just 84 were needed from eighten overs.  Under 5s.  #Toffee

But an inability to rotate the strike after these two departed saw the required rate rise and with it wickets fell bringing with them - ultimately - defeat by 25 runs.  Defeat from the jaws of victory as they say!    There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's.

11s and 15s both win against Accies [posted 09/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 11s and 15s both won this evening, with both victories being against the club's north side city rivals Glasgow Accies.  At Shawholm the 11s won by 27 runs, a Sohaib Shah hat-trick with three of the last four balls of the Accies' innings when they batted first being both the highlight as well as a game-changer.  Well bowled.  14 not out from Abdul Malik then helped see the 11s to their win.  Over at New Anniesland the Under 15s won by 36 runs, Akhil Ahmed's 39 being the highest score in the first innings as the 15s posted 125.

They then defended this sensibly to secure the evening's second win.  There are a match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's

Carlton "Kwik Cricket" tournament [posted 07/08/13]

Carlton_Kwik_Cricket_day_2013

Our Under 10 "Kwik Cricketers" were in Edinburgh today at Carlton CC's 150th anniversary "Kwik Cricket" tournament held at their Grange Loan ground.  Grant Cathcart reports, "A Poloc team of eight went to Carlton CC today where a good day was had by all.  We played four games against Perth Doo'cot CC, Hawick CC, Carlton Cats and Hawick Girls. The results read: tied, lost, lost and won. The standard was very good all round, with Hawick the stand-out team - they thrashed us (and everyone else I think!). They gave the team a great lesson in how bowling straight and orthodox batting (rather than slogging!) will not just beat you, but is better to watch.  All of the players chipped in with some good play, bowling and batting pretty well, but again, some good scoring was let down by some more Laurel & Hardy running and calling.

"Brian Gill and Carlton CC put on a really good day, with food and refreshments galore, sunshine to order, and medals for everyone."

Under 13Bs continue good form [posted 07/08/13]

Prestwick were the visitors to Shawholm tonight, on Under 13B League duty.  The visitors were in the field first, and the 'Locster batting was opened by the Shah boys.  And a good start was achieved - no wickets in their five-over spell in the middle, and a whopping 63 runs accummulated.  The second pairing of the Malik brothers didn't fair quite as well early on as two wickets fell, but as their time in the middle went on they, too, scored freely.  Net 20 added by these two.  And the second half followed a similar pattern.  Only two more wickets would fall, with 104 net runs added.Uzzair and Amaan jointly top-scored with 26, though Amaan's was a net 26 after he'd been one of the two batters out in the second half of the game.  Net 187 was the final score.  Prestwick's reply was - in parts - equally as high-scoring, but losing seven wickets hampered their accummulation of runs.  And a couple of their pairings didn't fare quite as well as the others.  They ended up on net 88, and with a 99-run defeat.  Turner and Cole did however, like Uzzair and Amaan - and Anataha in fact who scored exactly net 20 - make scores in the twenties.  On the wicket front there were two a-piece for Uzzair and Ahmed-Raza in what was a good win for their side.  There is a short match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's'

Panthers beaten heavily [posted 06/08/13]

WDCU_logo

The Panthers were badly beaten by the tenants tonight in the Evening League!  Langside batted as only they seem to, racking up 171 for 6 batting first on another warm and balmy evening.  Opener, and Langside skipper, Rafiq rode his luck in smashing an 86 (run out on the last ball of the innings) and this was the centre-piece of his side's big score.  There was a cameo 30 from Nasim too, but - in truth - dropped catches and poor lengths and lines by the bowlers didn't help matters!

Somewhat bizzarely in the midst of the carnage of the first twenty overs, the Professor bowled a maiden!  Ameer simply stood and swung at each of the six deliveries, and missed them all.....   Cue smiles all round.  The run-chase,.....well maybe not too much should be said.  20 for 6 maybe sums up the top order's efforts, with Nasim taking wickets like the school bully does £1 coins.  Easily and proving costly to the victims!  Only Usman (18) and Zaeem (49) can hold their heads up, Youngy ending up with his usual sheriff's badge.  112 all out, a heft defeat, and revenge for the roles having been reversed earlier in the season.  We have updated stat's and the scorecard [Ed: what there is of it!] online.

Under 13s and 18s both win versus Accies [posted 05/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

It was a good evening for the two junior sides in Monday night league action, both the 13s and 18s recording wins against Glasgow Accies.  Over at New Anniesland the Under 13s posted 160 for 1 with the top four all getting past 20, before the youngsters then bowled out their hosts for just 33 to record a comfortable win.  And, back at Shawholm, the 18s were winning just as comfortably, only in their case they were the chasing team, surpassing their opposition's 96 for 6 in the twelfth over for the loss of just two wickets.

Beast had taken a "3-for" as Accies top order struggled, and Rosco finished 34 not out in the run-chase.  There are short match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's.

Defeat in the Frank Smith semi- [posted 04/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 18s narrowly missed out on getting through to the Frank Smith Trophy final today, losing by just 3 runs chasing 143 to beat Prestwick.  Batting first, the Ayrshire youngsters posted 142 for 5, skipper Mitchell Rao's 48 being his side's top score.  There were also contributions from Miller (28) and "Overseas Amateur" Erasmus (19).  Beast and Umair each took two wickets for the 18s.

The run-chase then saw Owais (53) top-score, with cameos from Beast, Rosco and Aliyan.  But in the end the guys - after a valiant effort, fell 3 runs of Prestwick's score to see them miss out on a final berth.  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

(5-33) + (5-12) = 22 [posted 03/08/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

Now before anyone leaves one of those friendly messages in the Guestbook saying that the formula above doesn't work, then maybe I should explain.  Two "5-fors" in today's two matches were enough to see both the 'Loc and 'Holmboys secure league wins, and with it the win-points.....22 in all!  Get it?!?  The first "5-for" was at Torrance House where Lexy, a late [Ed: and the selectors would say inspired!] replacement after both Hari' and Zaeem called off, got rid of East Kilbride's top five batters as they were dismissed for 179.  The second was at Shawholm where Shabir's value as an all-rounder for the 'Holmboys was reinforced as he cleaned up the Torrance House XI's tail with 5 for 12 as the visitors were bowled out for just 108.  Both senior sides then successfully chased down their targets, with runs for Carl (52), Pasty (30), Rosco (32) and Flanners (42*).

Big scores in big win, and tight finish at the seaside [posted 02/08/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 11s and 15s were both up against Prestwick sides in their respective league matches this evening.  The 11s ended up on the winning side,.....just, as they somhow managed to take two wickets in the last seven balls to win by just 7 runs.  The game had looked pretty much done-and-dusted when 18 runs were still needed by the home side's last pair of batters off just eighteen balls.  But good hitting by Jackson combined with good running between the wickets by him and Tennant saw them sneak a run ahead with eight balls still to be bowled.

Luckily for the 11s Samee bowled Jackson with the last ball of the nineteenth over, and Sohaib did the same to Tennant with the last ball of the innings to secure a nail-biting win.  If the match down in Ayrshire was exciting because of its closeness, the cause for excitement back at Shawholm was for an altogether different reason.  Here the winning margin for the 15s was a whopping 173 runs, the excitement coming from Owais as he plundered an unbeaten 120.  And not to be outshone, Lewis helped himself to 90 not out, as 238 for 1 was posted.  The win was all but secured therefore at half-time, and so the second innings saw everyone get a bowl.  There are a match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's.

15Bs win at The Tryst [posted 31/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 15Bs were the only one of the club's sides in action tonight, the location: The Tryst.  The occasion was an away Under 15B League match with home club Stenhousemuir.  The side batted first after Abtaha had guessed correctly, and posted 118 for 5 in a measured innings.  Aliyan (45) was robbed of a maiden half century when a mid-wicket slip-up in an aborted single with CJ saw him run out.  CJ himself made 21 batting at three, with the other batters getting to the middle all chipping in.

The Stenhousemuir reply started really well and though they lost some wickets along the way, at the halfway stage they were right up with the required run-rate.  However the momentum in their innings was then snuffed out when Umair helped himself to a hat-trick on his way to a "4-for"!  And in the end, the dark and slightly damp end, the home side's run-chase kind of fizzled out , their innings closing on 76 when Grant was trapped LBW by Rorie in the sixteenth over.  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

East Kilbride beaten, but the 18s lose at Whitehaugh [posted 29/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

It was an evening of mixed fortunes for the club's two junior sides in action.  The Under 13Bs continued their good form in the league with a convincing home win over East Kilbride, the margin of victory being 96 runs.  However over at Whitehaugh, the Under 18s slumped to another league defeat, this time to the Kelburne|Greenock combined side, the 18s being unable to score 128 to win batting second.  With none of the batters really getting in, and only Disk scoring more than 20, it ended up a comfortable - 24-run - win for their opponents.

Honours even [posted 27/07/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

Today's two senior league games were against Stenhousemuir.  The 'Loc were in CSL action at home, while the 'Holmboys travelled to Larbert to take on The Tryst XI.  Come this evening it was honours even, with both away sides winning.  At Shawholm the 'Loc's 179 all out - with Anjum top-scoring with 61 - wasn't enough as Stennie got hom with over ten overs to spare for the loss of four wickets.  Anjum made it a decent all-round performance with a "3-for", the team being, perhaps, unfortunate not to take a few more scalps, dropped catches and a missed stumping proving costly.  Up in Larbert it was another member of the Syed Clan that was putting in a top performance, Owais Shah top-scoring with 86 was the Shawholm XI posted 262 batting first against their hosts.  Akhil's maiden half-century was the other highlight of the innings, the two Under 15s putting on 109 for the eighth wicket!

Then in the second innings the bowlers simply ran riot.  The Tryst XI were bundled out for just 47 to secure a winning margin beyond this Webmaster's arithmetical prowess.  There were four wickets for Haider, a hat-trick for Lexy, with Saqi' chipping in with a couple too.  Great stuff, and still a-top the league.  And here's something else - whisper it though - second-placed Meikleriggs and third-placed Torrance House both lost today.    There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's.

11s do the double over East Kilbride [posted 26/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 11s hosted East Kilbride at Shawholm tonight, in the return fixture to the game they'd won earlier this season at Torrance House.  Last time out the game was pretty tight, whereas this week it was a more convincing win, the margin being a whopping 60 runs.  The win centered, as so often, on a sound batting display in which only two wickets were lost, and then a bowling display that gave away far fewer freebies in wides and no balls than the opposition - this week 6 runs fewer.

Another good win for the club's youngest hardball team therefore.  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Membership update, and other club news [posted 25/07/13]

We last posted information on membership numbers - in early June - just after the cut-off for pre-existing members to have paid their 2013 subscriptions.  Well, nearly two months further on we're pleased to give another update.  Perhaps because of the good weather we've had, but hopefully, also, for other reasons, we've continued to see new members join the club, to the extent that, at the time of posting, membership numbers are now over 30% up on 2012, with subscription income increasing proportionately.

Membership_update_image

This is really encouraging as we continue to try and make Poloc an attractive option for players and non-players alike, and of all ages and both sexes.  In the June update we highlighted how the new PayPal facility had helped make paying membership subscriptions simple, more than £5,000 having being paid using it up until that point.  Pleasingly it has continued to be used as an efficient way to collect membership subscriptions, from new members, with the amount paid using the facility now nearing £6,000. We also continue to look at ways to improve the social side of life at the club, the success of the inagural Ladies Day being followed by the well-attended BIG Braai after the final Scottish Cup group stage match against Penicuik a fortnight ago.  Watch this space for more such events coming up.  Thanks to Matt Coyle and others involved in organising these events.

13Bs win [posted 24/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13Bs were in action tonight, with East Kilbride the visitors in a home league game.  The result saw the 13Bs win convincingly, the margin of error of 79 runs reflecting this.  Batting first the youngsters scored 159 for 3, seeing net 144 set as the target under the pairs cricket scoring system.  East Kilbride in their reply lost wickets at regular intervals and were never really up with the required run-rate, losing eight wickets in total, three to run outs.  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

13s and 18s both lose on Monday-night junior games [posted 22/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

All a bit depressing really.  The Under 13s' lost their unbeaten league record over at the city's second-best club as their collective Nemesis, West of Scotland, continued to have the Indian Sign over them.  After restricting their hosts to just 108 for 7, the 13s then did what they always do against West, namely forget both what to do when batting and forget how to bat when chasing.  81 for 6 was their reply, an innings that saw top-order dot balls kill off any chance of chasing down the 109 needed to win.

Abdullah (1), Uzzair (11) and Kess (12) used up a combined 66 deliveries - just over half the innings - to muster the runs they got, leaving the middle order and tail more than a hillock to climb.  Some late-overs bunting was the only real reason the winning margin wasn't much larger.  At Shawholm meanwhile the opposite was happening, not opposite to the extent the 18s won, no, opposite in that it was a run-fest!  Ferguslie racked up 163 for 3 batting first in this, the fourth, meeting of the sides this season, and in reply the 18s bunted 141 for 8.  Over 300 runs between the sides.  The bowling figures (bar Akhil's 4-0-16-0) were horrible, with only the batting of Owais (44 from 52 balls), Rosco (31 from 17 balls) and Beast 21 from 27 balls) partially making amends in what ended up as a 22-run defeat.  There are short match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's.

Shawholm exit Western Cup [posted 21/07/13]

WDCU_logo

The 'Holmboys were back in action today, less than 24 hours since beating Albert Park to stay top of the league.  Today's oppo' were Hillhead in the quarter-final of the Western Cup, the competition that pits the CSL Reserve League sides against the WDCU Premiership 1st XIs.  So the match would be a decent contest, and would give the 'Holmboys a good indicator of where they'd got to in terms of standard.

And on yet another gloriously hot and sunny day, despite ultimately falling short in their run-chase, the 'Holmboys demonstrated just how competitive they can be at this level, losing out by just 27 runs chasing 182 for the win.  Batting first, the hosts got off to a flyer before then slumping to 79 for 6, and then ultimately recovering to 181 all out thanks in the main to a 92-run seventh-wicket partnership between Yadav and Mehreban.  Letting Hillhead off the hook like that, added to leaking 29 runs in wides and no balls, would be what cost the 'Holmboys dear in the end.  Their run-chase never really got going as regards momentum, Ahmed's "7-for" for the home side proving a thorn in the side, and some late runs from Lexy, Motassim and Hari' just not being enough as the guys finished on 154 with - frustratingly - over fiver overs to spare.  We have updated stat's and the scorecard online.

Another two for two Saturday! [posted 20/07/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

It maybe almost goes without saying now, but the Shawholm XI winning run continued today.  Today's win was the side's fourteenth Saturday win on the trot, the last Saturday defeat being in the Western Cup over a year on the 14th of July last year.  And to find the side's last league reversal you've to go back all the way to the start of June 2012.  Today's latest win was a big one, Albert Park being beaten at the old ground by 197 runs.  The margin of victory owed much to the guys posting a formidable target batting first, 286 for 8 to be precise with half centuries for Shabir (65) and Spenny (58), Lexy chipping in with 42, and Rusty 28 down the order.  In reply the Albert Park XI were never really in it, slipping quickly to 2 for 2, before recovering slightly to 59 for 4, before eventually being bowled out for 89, Shabir with a "3-for".

In the reverse fixture over in newlands, the 'Loc made it two for two on the day with a similarly comprehensive win over Weirs.  Batting second in this one, the side ended up chasing just 92 for the win after a really comprehensive display with the ball, and in the field, saw Weirs skittled out for 91.  There were "3-fors" for both Carl and Mike, with Hari' getting a brace in his first CSL appearance of the season.  Then in the run-chase, less than 22 overs were needed to get the 92 runs required, Carl (21*) and Pasty (12*) finishing with the sheriff badges after Anjum and Abid had put on 48 for the first wicket.  #Toffee  There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's.

Eight beats four [posted 19/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

It was a four-player strong home Under 11 side that welcomed the 11s to Albert Park tonight as the club's youngest hardball team got back in to league action after a fallow week last Friday.  And such is Glesga ingenuity, four keen youngsters aren't going to not get a game in if at all possible.  So the revised playing conditions saw the Weirs youngsters bat in two pairs for ten overs each before each bowling five overs in the 'Locsters' innings, with the 11s giving them fielding support.  Simples!

The game itself was no less exciting than the drafting of the playing conditions were ingenious.  In the end the 11s sneaked home by just 7 runs, losing only three wickets to Weirs' nine, and owing a debt to Hassaan Mehmood for his 19 not out batting with Moiz in the third pairing.  So good fun, on a cracking evening, and a win to boot!  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Teams [posted 18/07/13]

There are five matches involving sides this weekend.  Tommorow's scheduled Under 11 match is away at Weirs, whilst the Under 15/16 side host Irvine.  Saturday's two senior games are the Albert Park XI at home in the CSL First Division Reserve League, and Weirs away in the CSL Western First Division.  Both games have noon starts.  Then, on Sunday, the Shawholm XI are back in action, this time at Hughenden against Hillhead in the quarter-final of the Western Cup. Friday's and Saturday's teams are online, as players confirm availability.  Sunday's team will follow.

Dark Side come out on top in final West League Cup group match [posted 17/07/13]

Death_Star_to_Shawholm_Google_Maps_pic

Tonight's latest skirmish between the Rebel Alliance and otherwise forces of good against the Storm Troopers and otherwise members of the Dark Side took place at Shawholm and saw said Dark Side return to base having secured the win, and with it the points needed to progress out of the group stages of this season's West League Cup.  And they did so by virtue of veritable thrashing being doled out.  Ouchay!  187 for 4 was way - way - too many for the 'Loc as it turned out, the guys' run-chase never really getting started and then fizzling out in the face of pretty decent bowling combined with an inability to hit boundaries throughout the innings.  It'd been a different story in the Dale's innings however with pro' Khan bunting fourteen 4s and a 6 on his way to 95.

All the bowlers took tap, with Mushy (2-0-33-0) and Doogie (2-0-20-0) copping the most flak as Khan launched his onslaught.  Then in the 'Loc's go, Saltires' bowler Sharif dealt with the top three and prevented any momentum from being established.  Defeat by 96 runs then.  There's a match report online (here), match scorecard (here) and updated stat's.

Panthers back on winning track [posted 16/07/13]

WDCU_logo

The Panthers were back in Evening League action tonight, and in doing so were the first senior side from the club to play at the new Bellahouston cricket facility.  And an interesting wicket it turned out to be!  Are there no hoses in the park?  Anyway that's by-the-by: the game saw the Panthers win comfortably in the end, chasing 127 to win, and - thanks to 61 (retired) from Shabir and a roll-back-the-years 60 not out from Davie Armour, the winning post was easily reached with a bundle of overs to spare.

Much as we'd like to say more on the game, the absence of any bowling figures in the 'book in the Active Life Club innings kind of makes any comment a tad tricky.  What we do know is that Aliyan and Shoaib both took a brace of wickets and - from the horse's mouth! - Flanners took two blinding catches.....  We have updated stat's and the scorecard [Ed: what there is of it!] online.

One for two in Monday night juniors action [posted 15/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

There was a home win, but a defeat on the road, for the club in tonight's junior league matches.  In the oldest age-group, the Under 18s, there was defeat at Toytown with the guys going down by 32 runs chasing 133 to beat the Dark Side.  Dropped catches in the first innings would cost the 18s, and despite a captain's bowling performance (4-0-14-2) from Ollie, the side still allowed the oppo' to post a big total, and one that never looked to be within range, especially after openers Owais (3) and Akhil (3) perished early on and the side slumped to 5 for 2.

Meanwhile back on the right side of Pollokshaws Road, the 13s were playing Prestwick.  Again it was the oppo' that batted first, the visitors from the seaside posting 106.  This was due to Cole retiring after getting to 30 combined with some pretty poor fielding and below-par bowling.  Then in their reply, the 13s chased down the required 107 runs for just three wickets, Uzzair retiring after a run-a-ball 33 and Kess chiiping in with 23.  There are short match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's.

Teams [posted 12/07/13]

There are four matches involving sides this weekend.  Tonight's scheduled Under 11 match is, however, not one of them after West of Scotland let us know they'd not be able to get a team together to fulfil the fixture. Instead, therefore, the focus of attention is entirely on Shawholm where the Under 15s host West of Scotland.  Saturday's two senior games are Penicuik at home in the Scottish Cup, and Bute away in the Western Cup.  The former has a noon start, the latter a 1pm kick-off.  Then, on Sunday, with David James away it'll be a Sunday XI that plays Glasgow University Staff at Garscube.

Selection changes, holidays, Ramadhan and players otherwise just making themselves unavailable for selection, has resulted in a large number of changes to each of the elevens who'll represent the club this weekend, with a particularly young NVT Shawholm side making the enjoyable ferry trip to Bute - tonight's and Saturday's teams are online, as players confirm availability.  Sunday's team will follow.

Bounce-back win against West [posted 12/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

There was a another myriad changes in one of our junior sides tonight, this evening's Under 15 line-up seeing a healthy complement of Under 13s in it, as well as Sohaib Shah whose Under 11 side was without a game.  The visitors to Shawholm, West of Scotland, were also hobbled by holiday unavailability, and what ensued was a high-scoring win for the 'Locsters.  The 15s batted first and an unbeaten 83 from Owais was the innings around which the guys posted 164.  The West guys were hampered by gaps in the field, but Owais batted well and anchored the innings.

In the second innings, eight bowlers were used, with wickets being shared between four of the, Aliyan executing a run out along the way to bowling West out for 96.  And young Master Qureshi was likely the standout bowler too, returning figures of 3.2-5-1, cleaning up last man Kelly to seal the win.  There is a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

The Panthers lose out to Renfrew in the Greenwood Trophy final [posted 11/07/13]

WDCU_logo

Tonight's final of the Greenwood Trophy proved a hurdle too far for Saqib Ahmed and his Panthers side as Renfrew ran out convincing winners after posting a mammoth 183 batting first at Meikleriggs.  On a cracking night for a game, a healthy crowd enjoyed the swashbuckling approach adopted by the Renfrew batters as they set about bunting the ball to all parts.  Coaching manual stuff it might not've been, but it was effective as it rained 4s and 6s for twenty overs.

None of the bowlers - as might be expected when the side as whole goes at 9s - came out of this context without scars, though maybe Mushy and Huss both going at less than 7-an-over merits some kind of acknowledgement.  The run-chase such that it was got off to a horror start when Abid ran himself out, and Shabir followed for just 1.  Muscles and Huss were also dismissed cheaply with the run-rate already north of tricky, and with Anjum (top-scoring with 20) already back in the hutch, the Panthers' innings was fast unravelling.  In the end it petered out to just 104 all out, leaving Renfrew as trophy winners.  We have updated stat's, a match report and scorecard online.

Another defeat to Ayr! [posted 10/07/13]

This is getting tedious!  Two weekends ago the NVT Poloc side lost narrowly to Ayr in the Scottish Cup.  Then last week there were two Under 15 defeats at New Cambusdoon and an Under 11 loss at Shawholm, and last night a fifth narrow defeat transpired with defeat in the Evening League.  And now, a sixth!    The team that took its turn at losing was the Under 13B side, tonight's margin of defeat being 67 runs.  There is a short match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

A reminder that tomorrow evening - Thursday - sees a Panthers side take on Renfrew at Meikleriggs (Ferguslie's home ground) in the final of the Greenwood Trophy.  We are encouraging as many people as possible to get over to Meikleriggs to support the team and so there will be no senior practice on Thursday.  Instead there will be a few cars leaving from Shawholm around 5.30pm to go to Paisley along with the team.

The Panthers lose narrowly [posted 09/07/13]

WDCU_logo

It was Evening League action for the Poloc Panthers side this evening, down at New Cambusdoon on another glorious night for T20 cric'!  In what turned out to be a close match, it was the home side that sneaked home, the Panthers just not able to chase down the 143 posted by their hosts.  This decent total owed much to Ross Mitchell's 41 at the top of the order, with contributions from Shujaa Khan (32) and Mitchell's fellow opener, Ayr's "Overseas Amateur" Michael Schofield.

In reply the Panthers mustered 126, just not quite enough, but an innings that included, like Ayr's had, a couple of decent knocks against an attack that had a mixture of 1st XI, veteran, and promising young players in it.  Skipper Muscles chipped-in with 32, this after Disk's recent purple patch with the blade had continued as he struck six 4s in a top-scoring knock of 36.  But neither innings would be enough to secure the win points, nor would Rosco's unbeaten 20 at the end.  On the bowling front, only really Matthew Stout can hold his head up, his three overs costing just 15.  We have updated stat's, a match report and scorecard online.

Representative selections [posted 08/07/13]

Well done to Owais Shah on his selection for the Western Warriors Under 15 side's upcoming inter-regional match against their Caledonian Highlanders counterparts.  Congratulations are also due to Ahmed-Raza Hanif, Rorie McWilliam, Aliyan Qureshi, Owais Shah - again - and Kess Sajjad on their selections for South Glasgow Under 14.

Runs in the sun! [posted 07/07/12]

WDCU_logo

The 'Loc were in CSL40 Cup action again, today travelling to Bothwell Castle Policies to take on Premier Division Uddingston.  Battinfg first on a glorious day, the 'Loc racked up a whopping 283 for 5 in their 40 overs, a score that, when tweeted, drew the following reply from absent Uddy skipper Bryan Clarke: "@poloccricket you taking the piss?"  Nope, 283 for 5!  That'll be one holiday ruined!

Such was the onslaught by the 'Loc batters that not a few home bowlers likely wished they hadn't been available for selection as runs for Abid (97),Blue Knee (45*), Anjum (40) and Carl (38) saw the home side set an unlikely target.  And in their reply, the Uddy batters never really got ahead of the run-rate, and with wickets falling and that rate rising they succumbed to Mikey's left-arm twirlers: a mere "7-for" for him!  In the end it would be a 92-run victory as Uddingston were bowled out in the 36th over for 191.  It's now down to the numbers guys on the CMC [Ed: does that us any confidence!  ] to decide who goes through from the group, with the Dark Side having burst the Feegie bubble on their big @CricketAM television day.    There's match report, scorecard and updated stat's online.

Guess what? A win and a loss again! [posted 06/07/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

It was business as usual today - at least as far as this season's concerned to date: the 'Holmboys chase down a score to remain unbeaten, whilst the 'Loc suffer defeat having just not scored enough.  The home game saw the Shawholm eleven defeat Glasgow University Staff in the Western Cup, runs for Shabir (35), Muscles (59) and Rosco (65 not out) seeing the side chase 213 for the victory.  Good stuff.  Meanwhile in the far north Stoneywood-Dyce romped home by eight wickets with more than half their overs to spare.  There were a few runs for Carly (35), with Owais Shah on Scottish Cup debut getting 24 batting at three.  There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's.

Double defeat to Ayr [posted 05/07/13]

WDJCU_logo

With the holiday season with us it was only the really committed    clubs and cricketers who were in action this evening.  Amidst a myriad of concessions around the leagues, the 'Loc and Ayr both fielded full sides in the matches between them in the Under 11 and 15 leagues tonight.  But unfortunately from our point of view, it was the Ayr sides who scooped the win points in both matches.  At home the 11s side featured three hardball cricket debutants in the Rana brothers, and Mikey Tomkins, and their inexperience likely showed a little as Ayr ran out winners by 30 runs.

A creditable performance, nevertheless, and all the more so when you consider that Ayr's Simpson - with 35 not out - was the difference between the sides, and more.  In the older age-group, Ayr ran out comfortable winners for the second night running, adding to the thumping win last night in the Scottish Cup.  New Cambusdoon is a long way away and the drudgery of that trip down and back up the M77 is made all the worse when you're returning empty-handed.  In our case, twice in 24 hours!  The margin of victory in this one: 50 runs, Ayr's 133 for 3 batting first being way too many for the 15s who added a mediocre batting display to horror show in the field!  There are match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's.

The Panthers progress to the Greenwood Trophy final [posted 04/07/13]

WDCU_logo

Like London buses, matches against Vale of Leven are nowhere to be seen, then two come along at once.  A month ago the Panthers travelled to Alexandria in the Glasgow Cup, and they were back there again this evening, this time in the semi-final of the Greenwood Trophy.  As last time, the side came home with a win, and the game followed a similar pattern in as much as the Panthers batted first before then successfully, and pretty straight-forwardly, defending what they'd posted.

164 for 5 was posted, Anjum top-scoring with 58 not out, with cameo 27s from both Stouty and Hari'.  Then in the second innings Hari' and Malik were pick of the Panthers' bowlers, bowling their seven overs for just 28 runs, meaning that the unbeaten 51 from the home club's Lawrence, batting at three, was in vain.  The Panthers now progress to the cup final where - rumour has it - they'll be up against Renfrew.  We have updated stat's, a match report and scorecard online.

15s crash out of the cup down in Ayr [posted 04/07/13]

The full details  - including match report, scorecard and updated stat's - are still to come, but the headline news is that the Under 15s crashed out of the Scottish Cup down in Alloway tonight, losing comfortably to thir hosts.  Batting first the 15s posted 117 for 1, Uzzair the batter to get out, and Owais having retired having reached 50.  This left Akhil and Lewis to add valuable runs in decent time at the end.  118 to win.  No cake walk unless the 'Locster bowlers bowled poor and this was backed up [Ed: are not backed up!] by poor and unenthusiastic fielding.  So, guess what transpired?  Yup, poor bowling and poor and unenthusiastic fielding!  Double whammy!  True be told none of the seven bowlers who tried to, managed to bowl with any consistency, and on a decent enough deck with short boundaries the result was predictably a barrage of boundaries (fifteen in less than fifteen overs) added to a plethora of "freebies" in the form of extras (18 runs in wides and no balls, again in under fifteen overs).  There were also dropped catches, mis-fields, over-throws and run outs missed.  Full House!  Ayr were deserved winners, strolling across the finish line with over five overs to go.  Actually they didn't stroll across it, they raced over it - predicatably with a 4!  Back to basics then for the bowlers, and the simple truth brought harshly into focus: if you can't execute the basics skills then what's needed is more practice.  It won' just happen.  Let's see if there's some improvement in 24 hours time when, spookily, the two sides meet again, this time on league duty.  There's a match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Another win in the West League Cup [posted 03/07/12]

The 'Loc were in West League Cup action this evening at Torrance House, taking on CSL First Division rivals East Kilbride.  In the field first after winning the toss, a "4-for" from Mushy and Zaeem's "3-for" were two of the main reasons why the home side were restricted to 102 for 8 in their twenty overs.  There were three cameo 21s from Kleinveldt, Smith and Ralphs, but no EK batter really got in.

In reply Carly and Abid put on 39 for the first wicket, before Owais played a patient anchor innings of 25 (51 balls), batting with Anjum and Pasty, before leaving centre stage for Mikey (2*) and Huss (2*) to see the side across the line for a five-wicket win.  There's match report, scorecard and updated stat's online.

121 for 2 wasn't enough to defend for the 18s this evening, as they succumbed to the visitors to Shawholm with nine balls to spare.  Stiffy (46) and Beast (33 not out) had laid the foundations for the decent-enough first innings total, though in hindsight likely wished they'd risked a bit more nearer the end to try and get closer the 140 that's oft' quoted as being the "par" score for the side's bowling attack to defend.  And as it turned out, the attack couldn't defend the total posted, ironically Elliott getting a mention on the bowling front as well as the batting one in this game, his 2.3 overs going for a whopping 35 runs being decisive in the final analysis.

So defeat number three for the side in the league this season, and notwithstanding the absences of Messrs. Stout and Shetty, and both Armours, this was certainly - like the East Kilbride|Uddingston game, and last week's tie at Hamilton Crescent - a defeat snatched from victory.  However there was much better news from the Death Star where 50 runs were scored off the last 30 balls of the match to see the 13s notch up yet another win for the club this season over the Dark Side.  For once Toytown's dimensions were to a visiting side's benefit, as Abdullah bunted 17 from just six deliveries to see his side across the finish line with just a ball to spare.  Earlier Uzzair had retired after getting to 30, and there'd been important contributions from Rorie (19) and Aliyan (13).  The home side would, as well as cursing their ground's tiddly boundaries, likely also blame the 41 given in extras as a cause of their losing this one.  Still, a win's a win, and - as ever: #ABC  There are match reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's.

Academy XI lose narrowly [posted 30/06/12]

WDCU_logo

The Academy XI was back in action after a couple of weeks of inactivity.  The city's second best club was the opposition in the home Sunday League game.  And in a rain-affected game that saw a close finish it was West of Scotland that took the in points, sneaking home with just an over to spare chasing 177.  58 from Mikey and 43 in extras (!) had seen the Academy post 176 [all out] batting first, but not even Ahmed-Raza returning figures of 6-2-17-3 could stop the visitors getting home.  A case of so-near-yet-so-far as only batting 36.4 overs maybe came home to roost.  There's a short match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

'Loc lose narrowly, 'Holmboys win,.....again! [posted 29/06/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

It was back to cup action today with the Scottish Cup and Western Cup group stage matches back centre-stage.  The 'Holmboys were down in Alloway and the 'Loc were at home - both matches saw Ayr as the oppo'.  At New Cambusdoon the Shawholm XI continued on its merry way this season, banking yet another win, this time a five-wicket success chasing 167 to beat their hosts in their 40-overs-a-side Western Cup clash.  Meanwhile, back at home, the 'Loc had posted 168 batting first, and narrowly missed out on defending this total as Ayr got home with two wickets in hand, and after having been 40 for 4.  On the individual performances side there were runs for Stiffy (45), Pasty (41) and Anjum (33), as well as wickets for Zaeem ("4-for") and Mushy ("3-for").  There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's.

Greenwood Cup semi-final berth booked [posted 26/06/13]

WDCU_logo

Abid Shuja's been at it again.  Another T20 ton was recorded in tonight's Greenwood Trophy quarter-final against Hillhead at Shawholm, Abid smacking a remarkable 120 in less than seventeen overs!    His first ton was thought out of the ordinary, an unbeaten 100 at Vale of Leven, but this one was verging on the ridiculous.  Thirteen 6s and seven 4s saw fielders searching in the trees on more than one occasion, opening partner Pasty watching with amusement and no little awe from the non-striker's end.  He'd score 48 and was the only other batter out after Abid departed.

All this left a somewhat shell-shocked Hillhead side looking for 205 to win when it was their turn to bat.  Unsurprisingly they fell some distance short as seven bowlers rolled their arm over.  A big win then, and Vale of Leven await tomorrow (!) in the semi-  We have updated stat's, a match report and scorecard online.

18s lose out in the Scottish Cup [posted 25/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 18s were back in action tonight after the drama of yesterday's tie at Hamilton Crescent.  This evening's game was another road trip game, this time away at Meikleriggs against Ferguslie.  It seems these two sides are meeting every other week, this being the third clash of the two clubs' oldest junior sides this season already.  And tonight's game - a Scottish Cup tie - saw Ferguslie win after two defeats.

They successfully chased 96 to secure a berth in the next round after second consecutive anemic batting display had resulted in the 18s not really setting their opponents much of a target.  Match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Panthers beat the tenants [posted 25/06/13]

WDCU_logo

After a few Glasgow Cup and Greenwood Trophy matches, it was good to finally get an Evening League match played this evening, and what better start than a "grudge" match against Langside College, a.k.a. the tenants!  And the good news is that when hands were shaken post-match, the bragging rights were ours, not theirs!  Batting first the Panthers posted 132, with NJ top-scoring with 47, but all the batters who got in reaching double figures.

Then, defending this total, "3-fors" from Shoaib and Motassim helped bowl out the tenants to secure the win.  We have updated stat's, a match report and scorecard online.

13s win, and 18s tie! [posted 24/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 18s recorded the fifth tie in ten years of junior cricket tonight when, on the last ball of their innings, and chasing 99 to beat the 18s, West of Scotland's Alex Ewing bunted Stiffy's final delivery through mid-wicket for a 4 that saw his side finish on 98 for 4.  An exciting end to a game that looked for much of the first half as if the 18s would slip to a second league defeat in as many weeks, before then becoming a game they appeared to be unable to lose as West needed 31 from the last eighteen balls to win.

But a tie it was.  And as ever in such games it's easy for each player to think where that vital 1 run could've been scored or saved.  At Shawholm, meanwhile, there was an altogether more regulation match being played.  Stirling County were the visitors in the Under 13 League, and it was the 13s who eased to victory, winning by 71 runs after posting 132 for 1, with CJ retiring, and Aliyan and Rorie both scoring cameo twenty-odds.  The big total then allowed plenty of bowlers to roll their arms over, including young Moiz Maqsood who promptly returned a "3-for"!  Well bowled!  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

Kwik Cricket news [posted 23/06/13]

Grant Cathcart's Under 10 Kwik Cricketers were at Toytown this morning for the latest WDJCU Under 10 festival.  Here's his report: "The winter wind returned briefly to chill the hands - my suncream came in handy only when weighing down the wickets - but we beat the rain to play three matches.  The boys had a team of five this week, all of whom bowled like demons and batted really well.  Against a Kelburne side who clobbered us last week the boys got a creditable tie as they tried to warm up to the conditions.  In the next two matches they motored to victory with something to spare.  First came Ferguslie, who were doing okay until Ubaid took a hat-trick, clean bowling each!  In fairness, Ferguslie seemed even younger than us, but the boys still did well to pick the good balls and punish the poor to win by 45 runs.  In the last game against Stenhousemuir all five bowlers kept them on the back foot from the word go, then hit a bunch of sixes to win by 50.  Calling and running still need a bit of work, but it was a very positive display leaving them all disappointed not to have played the Dark Side.  If they bowl like this on Friday, Coach Young'll be laughing."

Winning Saturday [posted 22/06/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

Last year, the away CSL fixture at Whitehaugh saw a 'Loc batter top-score with 101 and a slow bowler take a "4-for" as the side went on to take the league win points.  So here's a spooky thing: a year on and Anjum top-scores with - you've guessed it! - 101, NJ takes a "4-for", and the 'Loc go on to win.  Deja vu!  We like it.  So a league win at the fourth time of asking, as encouraging performances in other competitions against decent opposition translates into league form.  For Anjum it's a maiden 'Loc ton, and his name on the honours board, but far more importantly it's league points.  Unfortunately, like other games in-and-around the city, the "mirror" fixture at Shawholm didn't beat the weather and there's just the one match report online (here), match scorecard (here) and updated stat's.

Under 11s and 15Bs both win [posted 21/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 15/16 side saw off East Kilbride by a whopping 96 runs this evening as no fewer than four batters retired after reaching 30, and the Shahid boys put on 39 into the bargain.  172 for 0!  In reply ten players bowled and East Kilbride were restricted to 76 all out.  In the evening's other junior league match there was a fourth straight league win for the 11s.  They beat Glasgow Accies over at New Anniesland by just 123 runs as too many players messing around and not concentrating nearly saw the side come a cropper.

Wides galore were bowled, and some of the shot selection left much to be desired when it came to the batting.  Hmmm.  Match reports and scorecards online alongwith updated stat's.

13s crash out of the cup [posted 20/06/13]

Cricket_Scotland_logo_2013

The Under 13s were soundly beaten tonight at Hamilton Crescent by West of Scotland's all-conquering equivalents.  Aside Abtaha's 30 not out that saw her retire, the others will likely find little to look back with pleasure on in the game.

Batting first the 13s slumped to 16 for 4, Rorie and Kess both with ducks, and Aliyan having scored just 2.  Robbie McCallum had literally swept the guys away, cleaning up all three Area Squad "stars" on his way to figures of 4 for 6.  And had Abtaha not dug in and shown what proper batting looks like with her retirement-inducing 30, the 13s might not have posted to 86 for 6 they did.  In the home side's run-chase, one small consolation was that four wickets were taken and only two batters got in to double figures.  McCallum was one, the Hamilton Crescent side's talisman bunting a fourteen-ball 31 to kick-start the successful run-chase which was all-over-and-done-with in eleven overs dead.  "Dead", like the 13s' 2013 Scottish Cup campaign.  Lessons to be learned then, the first being maybe we're not as good as some of us think we are!  Match report and scorecard online alongwith updated stat's.

Double done over Weirs [posted 19/06/12]

WDCU_logo

First of all let's put on record that it was good to see competitive 1st XI cricket back at Albert Park tonight.   The 'Loc's southside near neighbours haven't had their ground troubles to seek in recent years and so, after a decent dry spell, it's great to see Weirs able to host top-level matches again on the home patch.  The reason for the visit tonight was the return West League Cup group stage match against the 'Loc's CSL First Division rivals.  The home side won the toss and posted 106 for 8, Omar Akram top-scoring with 32 in an innings that saw Anjum take a cheeky wee "4-for".

The Loc's successful run-chase, by contrast, featured only three batters, Abid bunting another quick-fire bundle: 60 this time, a knock that included seven 4s and two 6s.  Keeping him company most of the way was Carly who looked in decent touch, making 37 before succumbing to Siggy Young's guile.  This left enough time for Owais, on debut, to get out to the middle and hang around for a cheeky sheriff of 9 not out.  #Toffee  We've a match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

Another Frank Smith Finals Day berth booked [posted 18/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 18s were in action again this evening, less than 24 hours after slipping to league defeat against Prestwick.  Tonight's opponents were Ferguslie, and the match was the 2013 Frank Smith Trophy quarter-final.  Shawholm looked a picture as battle commenced, the visitors having won the toss inviting the 18s to bat first.  Owais and Stiffy batted well to give the side a decent start, aided by some wayward bowling.  Both batters - 27 and 24 respectively - would make good contributions to the side's eventual total of 138 for 4, with Stouty (26 from 23 balls) and Rosco (15* from twelve balls) doing similarly.

In reply the Ferguslie run-chase got off to a horror start as dangerman Darroch was run out for just 2.  And, despite some Keystone Cops fielding, and 27 (31 balls) from Preston-Jones, and a near rin-a-ball 36 from Tahir, the Paisley youngsters finished 13 runs short of the winning line.  The 'Locsters now face either Glasgow Accies or Prestwick in the semi-final.  Match report and scorecard online, as are updated stat's.

Panthers lose to Helensburgh in the Glasgow Cup [posted 18/06/13]

WDCU_logo

The Glasgow Cup group stage matches were again on the fixture card for this evening, and for the Panthers this meant a trip down the Clyde to Ardencaple to take on Helensburgh.  The home side had first go on another beautiful summer's evening, and posted 149 in their twenty overs.  Four home batters got past 20, and there was a brace of wickets for Matty Stout.  The Panthers, in reply, had one fewer batter into the 20s - Huss top-scoring with 33 - and finished 30 runs shy of their hosts' total to see the win points stay in Helensburgh.  We have updated stat's, there's a report to come, and the scorecard's up-and-online to look at.

18s and 13s both defeated [posted 17/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13s were game-less tonight as regards league action, but took up the offer to go to the Death Star to participate in the third southside derby in less than a week.  But after two wins - the 13Bs and 1st XI - the 13s couldn't make it three-in-a-row as they fell to defeat.  As ever the youngsters were bemused at playing on the now-familiar Toytown junior ground runway-strip, but this doesn't excuse a second consecutive Monday night of bowling pies at batters - they got away with this at home to Helensburgh on an oval, but were caned at the Toytown rectangle.  In the end a straight-forward win for the Dark Side's mini-minor Storm Troopers.

The 18s, meanwhile, were in home league action against Prestwick.  The Ayrshire side featured a mix of the older, talented and experienced (their "Overseas Amateur", Mitchell Rao, Michael Miller, Gregor Cairns and James Pettigrew) and the very young and inexperienced.  But the talent they had on parade turned out to be sufficient as, batting first, their score of 112 for 5 turned out to be 14 more than the 18s could muster, despite a really impressive 53 from StoutyMatch reports and scorecards online, as are updated stat's

Dark Side defeated [posted 16/06/12]

WDCU_logo

The latest in the long-running struggle against the Dark Side today in the WDCU CSL 40 Cup saw the Rebel Alliance come out on top in this particular skirmish.  On a day as warm and pleasant as yesterday was cold and horrid, the Death Star's Storm Troopers came up 35 runs short chasing the 233 the 'Loc had set batting first.  The competitive score had been made in the main thanks to 97 from Anjum, Carl (53) and Abid (25) chipping in with cameos.

The 'Loc's innings was the perfect example of the "two partnerships wins" theory: 55 for the first wicket (Abid and Anjum), and 158 for the second (Carl and Anjum) being the two in question.  The Dark Side's 198 for 9 in reply owed much to 49 from opener Sharif, with 30s from Farid and Shahid.  But, and to re-emphasise the point, the second innings only saw one partnership of 50-plus, the 62 between Farid and Shahid.  On the bowling front there were wickets for all the bowlers bar Rusty, with a couple of run outs (Pasty and Anjum) thrown [sic!] in for good measure.  We've a match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

Kwik Cricket news [posted 16/06/13]

Grant Cathcart's Under 10 Kwik Cricketers were at The Tryst this morning for the latest WDJCU Under 10 festival.  Here's his report: "A good win against Stenhousemuir II should have seen the guys off to a flyer, with everyone bowling straight and guarding their wickets well.  However, the enthusiasm and willingness to offer an opinion to the (rotating) captain descended into rather anarchic free-for-alls at times whilst fielding. (I blame the Coach, who from next week will be taking a Brian Spence-like approach to any free thinking on the part of the players!).  The second match was against Greenock, where good fielding and some great bowling - including a hat-trick for Hassan - should have meant a good chance of victory. However haphazard batting meant cheap wickets were given away and poor running - no calls, watching how far the ball went off a good shot before setting off, ambling up the wicket - meant the team missed lots of opportunities.  James and Samee pulled the team back into it from being -1, to tie the match, scoring 15 runs as last pair.  The third match - oh dear.    Batting first, the boys gave away too many cheap wickets, albeit against a very good (and older, but that goes without saying for this current crop of 'Loc youngsters!) Stenhousemuir I side.  Heads went down a bit, and team spirit evaporated.  Still, it was a great day out (thanks to Safder Rana for help with transport), and the Coach did manage some sunburn, which did not seem remotely on the cards this time yesterday!"

Under 15s see off Greenock in Scottish Cup [posted 14/06/13]

Half centuries from both Akhil and Beast set up a big total for the 15s this evening in their Scottish Cup clash with their Greenock counterparts at Glenpark.  Throw in cameos from Uzzair and Kess, and the target for the Glenpark youngsters to progress in the competition was 177.  But despite an unbeaten 48 from Harry Briggs, a successful "chase" never really looked on.  All ten 'Locster non-wicket-keeping fielders got a bowl as Greenock were restricted to 90 for 4, resulting in a 87-run win for the 15s and a place in the next round where they'll play Ayr.  The scorecard is online, as is a short report, as are updated stat's.

The re-arranged opening round tie in this year's Greenwood Trophy was played tonight, and saw the Panthers progress to meet Hillhead in the quarter-final.  Batting first the visitors made just 79, being bowled out in the seventeeth over.  There was a "3-for" for Disk, as well as 2 for 9 for Hassan Akram on his return from the cricketing wilderness!  The run-chase was, thereafter, in the "routine" category as Shabir Baig, on debut, bunted an unbeaten 43 (including five 4s, and two 6s) and Hassan made 33 not out.  The run-chase took under seven overs.  We have updated stat's, a report and the scorecard online.

Under 13Bs beat the Dark Side [posted 12/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13Bs were in the Death Star tonight, and returned victorious from their league clash with the Dark Side.  The young Rebel Alliance won at a canter, losing just the one wicket en route to scoring 123 batting second.  Under the leagu'es pairs cricket scoring system this net 118 was plenty enough to secure the win-points, Clydesdale having posted a net 71 in their dig.  The batters did their jobs responsibly after the bowlers had recovered from a shaky start.

An explosive start by the home side's opening batters was slowly pegged back as nine wickets were taken.  Then sensible decision-making and shot selection, combined with good calling and running between the wickets, saw the batters seal the win.  Match report to come, but the scorecard is online already, as are updated stat's.

18s win then watch,.....13s win! [posted 10/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

We're not sure if it was officially the shortest away trip ever, but the Under 18s nipping over to Bellahouston Park this evening, skittling Victoria for 30, chasing their target down in 4.1 overs, and then getting to Shawholm in time to watch the second innings of the Under 13s' home game against Helensburgh must be right up there!  The Victoria innings lasted just over ten overs, Akhil taking his second "5-for" in two days, before Rosco and Beast then scored the 31 runs needed for the win in just over four overs.  Thank you, and good night.

The game at Shawholm that the 18s got back to support the 13s in was altogether more traditional.  Batting first, the Under 13s had Abtaha (27*) to thank - along with wayward Helensburgh bowling! - in being able to post 118 for 6.  Then, after early wickets fell in the second innings, All ten non-wicket-keeping fielders managed to have a bowl as the side eased to the win.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's

Academy XI win at Dumfries [posted 09/06/12]

WDCU_logo

An Academy XI was in Sunday League action today at Nunholm, and returned north with a win.  Highlights included a "5-for" for Akhil, and 92 not out from Mikey.  In a young eleven, there were bowling spells for seven bowlers, including Ahmed-Raza, Aliyan, Akhil and Cammy, as well as a good spell from Matt.  And in the run-chase - the guys chased down 198 to win with an over to spare - there were also meaningful contributions from Muscles and Disk.  There's a short match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

Kwik Cricket news [posted 09/06/13]

Grant Cathcart's charges were again in Kwik Cricket action this morning at the latest WDJCU Under 10 festival, this week hosted at East Kilbride's Torrance House.  The youngsters got three games in as usual, this week recording wins against Ferguslie and Prestwick, and losing out only the once against Kelburne.  Grant commented that Hassan and Ubaid-Raza both batted particularly well - Hassan for his ball striking, Ubaid-Raza for his defensive technique.  [Ed: obviously seeing the benefit of his mammoth six-hour practice session on Saturday!]
In the areas for improvement on the report card was however, "running between the wickets"!  Keystone Cops perchance?  The next festival is next Sunday at Stenhousemuir.

Another win|loss Saturday [posted 08/06/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

The Saturday cricket story of season 2013 continues!  The 'Holmboys can't lose, the 'Loc can't win.  At home the Glenpark XI was the latest side to be seen off by the Shawholm boys, this time in a nine-wicket win.  After restricting their visitors to just 105 [Ed: including 32 (!) in wides] in under 36 overs, the top three batters then romped across the finish line inside twenty overs.  Aamir - skippering for Saqib who's injured his hand - made an unbeaten 48, and Stiffy enjoyed batting up the order with 32 not out.  Rosco (0) was the only casualty.  In the first innings there were "3-fors" for Lexy and Mushy as the Glenpark side - featuring five juniors - struggled to get any partnerships going.

Meanwhile down the water at Glenpark itself the 'Loc were on the end of a 70-run defeat.  Greenock batting first racked up 253 for 8, thanks in the main to some wayward bowling and two big scores from Colson (95) and Flack (72).  After this partnership was broken - and with 300+ looking on the cards for a while - the rest of the home batting line up struggled, only two getting into double figures.  A case of "what if", if the Colson|Flack partnership had been broken.  But it wasn't to be.  Nine bowlers were tried as only Anjum and Carl really managed to control Colson's and Flack's scoring, the other seven used returning combined figures of 32-1-190-7, as nearly 6-an-over were leaked.  In the subsequent run-chase there were starts for Mikey (27), Pasty (28) and Anjum (41), but no-one "went on", and with the middle order and tail capitulating the side was bowled out for 183 inside 45 overs to seal a third consecutive league defeat.  There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's.

Under 11s still unbeaten,.....unlike the 15s! [posted 07/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 11s sneaked home by virtue of not losing as many wickets as their opponents East Kilbride tonight at Torrance House.  And here's a thing, the weather was so good that even the legendary midges of Calderwood Glen stayed in the shade!  Both sides scored 71, but the 'Locsters lost seven wickets to East Kilbride's nine.  There was a "3-for" for Sohaib and a different kind of "three" for Samee: three run outs!

Meanwhile back at the old ground, the 15s were imploding in truly Poloc style.  Having cruised to 78 for 3 in the thirteenth, with Lewis having gone past 50, the side somehow capitulated to 99 for 9 seven overs and four balls later.  Astonishingly the 15s had scored just 21 runs from 46 deliveries in the last third of their innings, with the last six batters scoring just 6 off their bats.  100 to win then was nae bother to opponents Hillhead who romped home for the loss of just two wickets and with over six overs to spare.  As bad as the middle- and lower-order batting had been, the bowling was arguably worse!    A thumping, the 15s looking a little like the 18s had on Monday!  Match reports and scorecards online alongwith updated stat's.

Under 13s cup match cancelled [posted 06/06/13]

Tonight's Under 13 Scottish Cup tie, at home to Greenock, has been cancelled after Greenock contacted to the club mid-afternoon to say they'd completely forgotten it was on.  Junior Convenor Kevin Flack apologised profusely for the oversight, but as a consequence tonight's match has been cancelled.  The tie has also been conceded and, therefore, the Under 13s progress to round two where they'll go to either West of Scotland or Prestwick.

The 'Loc ease to cup win against Weirs [posted 05/06/12]

WDCU_logo

Though a heavy shower tried to prevent, tonight saw the latest West League Cup section match played at the ground, southside rivals Weirs the visitors.  The game saw a return to winning ways for the 'Loc with a new-look line-up.  Abid, Muscles and Doogie came in to the side and Blue Knee was an absentee, away on business.  It was the visitors who had first use of the deck, and would post 89 for 8 to set the 'Loc 90 to win.  And chase the target down the batters duly did.

There were runs for Abid for the second night running, bunting a rapid 40 that saw him hit five 4s, and a 6, before being trapped LBW.  Carly was the other man out, Pasty (18*) and Anjum (3*) seeing the side home with more than six overs to spare.  The wickets were shared around the bowlers with Mikey getting a "3-for" and only Rusty being without, and the eight Weirs wickets to fall included no fewer than three run outs.  We've a match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

Membership update, and other club news [posted 05/06/13]

As most members know the 31st of May is a key date for membership subscriptions, player selection for any Poloc teams after this date being conditional on subscriptions having been paid.  And, whilst there are - quite literally - one or two stragglers, the vast majority of subscriptions have been paid, and in fact were paid some time ago.  So, firstly, thanks to everyone who's paid up - our club relies on its subscription income and collecting it efficiently and timeously is really encouraging.

Membership_update_image

Talking of collecting subscriptions efficiently, it's maybe worth highlighting how the new PayPal facility has helped in this regard with more than £5,000 being paid using it.  Turning to some membership statistics now, and also by way of encouragement.  Confirmed membership numbers this year are already up on last year, the validated membership roll now standing at 159, an increase of 26, or nearly 20%, on 2012.  And, as a consequence, membership income is similarly up year-on-year.  Revitalising the Country Membership category has been one innovation this year, with past players and members - now living in far flung places - being reconnected with and renewing membership at Poloc, albeit from a-far.  How we continue to engage with these important Alumni is something that the office bearers are actively looking at.

A final couple of pieces of news by way of update: the inaugural Ladies Day event last Saturday was a great success and a big thanks and "well done" are due to its organisers.  Again this event was a good fund-raiser for the club, but as importantly a way of connecting with the wider Poloc "family".  It's hoped we can repeat the event next year.  Secondly, most members around the club will have seen the refurbishment that has been started as regards replacing all the windows and doors.  Starting with the rear entranceway and house, works to date have now completed replacement of windows in the Ground Convenor's area, and work starts on the main frontage of the clubhouse itself next week.  Please be patient as the contractors carry out their work, the end result of which should be a much-improved look, as well as a more energy-efficient and wind- and water-tight structure.

Panthers win in Glasgow Cup [posted 04/06/13]

WDCU_logo

Though the scorecard's still to be actually seen in the flesh - so to speak - the news from Alexandria tonight is that the Panthers eased past Vale of Leven in the Glasgow Cup, winning by 31 runs in a high-scoring T20.  Highlight of the night was Abid's ton, as the Panthers posted 151 for 5 batting first.  The guys then defended this as Vale of Leven finished 32 shy of what they needed for the win, Stuart taking a "3-for".  We'll have updated stat's and the scorecard of the game just as soon as that 'book makes its way into our possession.  Well batted Abi'!

13s win but 18s lose in Monday juniors action [posted 03/06/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13s saved the club's face tonight with their convincing win at Bothwell Castle Policies, beating the home combined side featuring players from Uddingston and Drumpellier.  There were retirements from CJ and Uzzair as the 13s posted 136 for 4, before the bowlers - all nine used by skipper Abtaha - restricted their opponents to 84 all out.  [Ed: and curiously "all out" in this instance means ten wickets, excluding the retiree, twelve home batters somehow making it to the middle!]

Meanwhile, however, the 18s were capitulating at Shawholm to another combo side, this time Uddingston in tandem with East Kilbride.  And when we say capitulating, we mean horribly capitulating.  The opposition had little to do but wait for the 18s' batters to get themselves out, which they duly did, and with some regularity.  The most innocuous of bowling attacks tore the heart out of the top order to leave the 'Locsters at 19 for 3 as batters seemed incapable of playing straight to.....straight balls!  Then after Disk and Beast had rebuilt they too, both, got out with the score on 71.  Criminal.  92 was all that was posted and meant that the visitors' batters need do nothing but hang around to win.  And they did.  A ten-wicket win for the Uddy/EK side, and thoughts of a long season for the 18s unless the batting improves.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's

Ladies Day pictures [posted 03/06/13]

A big thanks to everyone who helped organise and run, and who attended, Saturday's inaugural Ladies Day at Shawholm.  As well as being a great fund-raising event for the club, the day was great fun and blessed by good weather.  We've a few pictures in the Gallery already of the day, but if anyone's got any more just email them on to the Webmaster and we can add them to the selection.  Thanks again to everyone involved!

Sunday XI stroll to a win in the sunshine [posted 02/06/12]

WDCU_logo

The Sunday XI got their Sunday League campaign up-and-running with a convincing win at home today against Glasgow University Staff.  Uncle Frank's mob went down by 108 runs, as the Sunday XI posted 238 for 3 before dismissing the uni' boys for just 130.

There were scores for Rosco (68*) and Pasty (74), as both took the advantage of some time in the middle.

Then with the ball there was scope to bowl eight bowlers, six taking at least one wicket, as - like the batters - the bowlers enjoyed rolling their arms over in the warmth.  We've a short match report, updated stat's and the scorecard of the game online.

Another win|loss Saturday [posted 01/06/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

It was déjà vu all over again today as the 'Loc lost out in the CSL whilst the 'Holmboys chased down another score to seal a win in the CSL Reserve League.  The oppo' this Saturday was Ferguslie - the CSL game taking place at home.  Having lost the toss the 'Loc were invited to bat first, and after a sticky start reached 113 for 3 with Carly and Mikey looking reasonably well set.  But six wickets falling for 37 runs led the side to end up 165 all in due course.  In their run chase Ferguslie got home seven wickets down with just over eight overs to spare.  And on the surface this seems convincing, but with only numbers ten and Jack to bat, and Feegie's recognised batters all back in the "hutch", another wicket might've introduced what's commonly referred to as "squeaky bottom" time!  Another game we're in, but take nowt from.

Over in Paisley, it was another familiar scene with the 'Holmboys chasing down a score to secure league win points.  This week the total to be gotten past was 192, after 86 from Meikleriggs's skipper Mories and 50 from Sturgeon had seen the home side post this score.  The wickets, as Meikleriggs were bowled out, were shared around.  The run-chase proved successful with seven wickets falling along the way.  There were good contributions from Spenny (51 from 81 balls), Wills (35 from 34 balls) and Abid (32 from 17 balls) as the 'Holmboys got home inside 43 overs.  There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's.

18s progress in FST13 [posted 31/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

Less than a week since they won the held-over Finals Day of the 2012 Frank Smith Trophy, the club was back in FST action this evening in the first round of the 2013 competition.  The draw saw thm travel to Maress to take on Irvine.  And on a beautiful evening in the summer sunshine, the 18s strolled to the win.  OJ won the toss and elected to have a bat, and openers Stiffy (50*) and Rosco (82*) proceeded to do the business for their side, each batting through and posting a challenging 154 for 0.  In reply the home weren't really in it, and were bundled out for just 23, in 19 overs.

The wickets were spread around, with braces for the skipper, Umair and Aliyan.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

The 'Loc exit the Rowan Cup [posted 30/05/12]

WDCU_logo

It went down to the second-last ball, but in the end - very near the end - it was Uddingston that progressed to the semi-finals of the Rowan Cup.  The 'Loc had posted 105 in their twenty overs, with Mikey finding some form with an unbeaten 39, Anjum (21) being the only other batter into double figures.  And 105's one of those funny scores that can sometimes be defended, but is often romped past.  As it was, it was nearly defended.  Uddy quickly lost Amir Gul (0) at the start of their run-chase, before Allan and one their recent recruits, Rai, added 23 for the second wicket.

Rai was then joined by lateral hire #2, Reddy, who was as his name sounds.  Another 24 runs were put on by this pairing, before the former departed - 47 for 2 in the eleventh.  Eaksy-peaksy.  Exit recruit #2, enter recruit #3 in the form of Martin.  He and Reddy would see the innings through as a pair, the winning runs being struck off the penultimate delivery.  But it hadn't looked a shoe-in, as late as the fifteenth over, but Mushy's last over - over 15 itself - going for 16 proved to be a turning point, Reddy despatching two deliveries for maximums.  Close then, but not close enough.  We've a match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

Defeat in CSL40 opener [posted 26/05/13]

CSL40_logo The 'Loc travelled to Meikleriggs today for the opening group stage match in the new WDCU CSL40 Cup.  Battin first the guys looked well positioned when they'd reached 70 for 2 in the seventeenth over with Blue Knee (31*) and Carly (23*) going along nicely.  However Euan was trapped leg before with the score on 70 and this triggered a collapse that saw the side skittled out for just 116.  In reply, though they were 21 for 3 early on, hosts Ferguslie romped home inside 23 overs with Dave Stafford top-scoring on 69 not out.  There is a match report online (here), match scorecard (here) and updated stat's.

They said it might never happen! [posted 26/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

After heart break in so many of them in recent seasons, the 'Locsters finally won a Frank Smith Trophy final today!  To win the much-coveted premier west junior trophy - with its history going back to 1964 - the 19s had to see off Drumpellier in the semi-final, before beating Ferguslie in the final.  Both matches - as the first semi-final had been - were cliff-hangers.  After skittling Drumpellier for just 61 in the first game, the 19s only just scraped past the winning post, seven down.

Then, in the final, after Ferguslie had posted 109, the 19s recovered from 4 for 2 early on to win with only three balls to spare.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.  We've also got photographs - courtesy of both Stuart Rousen and Leslie Ingram-Brown - of the day, in the Gallery.

A win and loss versus East Kilbride [posted 25/05/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

For the second and third times in four days, the club found its senior XIs up against East Kilbride.  As on Wednesday night in the West League Cup, the 'Loc couldn't get past their Lanarkshire counterparts, batting second.  However the 'Holmboys did continue their unbeaten start to 2013 with a win at Torrance House.  The match at Shawholm was one in which the 'Loc appeared very much in it when, in the 38th over, EK had slipped to 129 for 7.  However Saeed - who'd finish 56 not out - chaperoned the tail to post what had seem an improbably high total of 205 all out.  In reply the 'Loc never really threatened as that familiar problem of not losing wickets returned to haunt the side.  62 for 5 in the 22nd - hmmmm - 124 all out in the 42nd.  All too familiar.

Also familiar however is the 'Holmboys' ability to win game with ease, often chasing down perfectly reasonable totals in the process.  Against Cambusdoon in game one of their season they strolled to the win by chasing 160-odd, and today - after Torrance House had batted first - they chased 183 to win, four-down.  There were runs for most of the top order, Doogie (43) and Owais (40*) being the best of the bunch.  There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's

Another Friday double for juniors [posted 24/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

In what ended up being one of latest ever return times for any Poloc junior side's away match, the Under 15Bs finally arrived back at Shawholm just after 10.30pm.  But, pleasingly, they were happy - if tired - faces that were being worn by the players as they were collected by waiting parents.  Happy in that they'd won by 35 runs against their Stirling County hosts.  Earlier on in the evening [Ed: much earlier on!] the Under 11s had started this weekend's cric'-fest with a win of their own, their victory coming by the much narrower margin of just 7 runs over southside rivals Weirs.

And so, after a win-less season in 2012, the ever-developing, but still very young, 11s have now started 2013 with back-to-back successes.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's

The 'Loc progress in the Rowan [posted 23/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The second of two back-to-back 1st XI T20 cup matches took place tonight, and after the defeat-snatched-from-victory tale of 24 hours previous, your scribe is delighted to announce the arrival of a win!  Again deciding to chase, Pasty top-scored in a successful second half that saw the winning post of 102 passed with three balls to spare.  Also in the runs were Anjum (27) and Coya (23*).  The target of 101 had been posted thanks to 46 from Prestwick's "Overseas Amateur" Jean-Pierre - just call me "JP" - Erasmus, assisted in no small measure by some lacklustre fielding.

The bowling largely passed muster, though NJ's figures of 4-0-31-1 were a tad on the expensive side.  And it was 101 all out with Stafford Jnr. being run out by his dad, Stafford Snr., off the last ball of the final over.  This was the third run out of the innings, Pasty and Flanners executing the other two.  We've a match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

West League Cup defeat [posted 22/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The West League Cup was back tonight after a fortnight's break.  The visitors to Shawholm tonight were East Kilbride and, after a tense finish to a game the 'Loc should surely have won comfortably as the game entered its final quarter, the Lanarkshire side snuck off back to the New Town with the win-points.  They achieved this after defending 110 having batted first, the 'Loc somehow contriving to lose the game after being 36 for 1 after five overs, and 54 for 2 at halfway.

But a killer three-over spell between overs twelve and fourteen saw the side lose two wickets and accumulate just 9 runs and, effectively swing the momentum back to EK.  27 from the final four overs then proved to be 7 too many to get and it was a loss by 6 runs.  We've a match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

Teams [posted 21/05/13]

There are - again - lots and lots of matches scheduled for this weekend coming.  Weather permitting of course!    Friday night sees two junior matches - the Under 11s are at home to Weirs and the Under 15s go to Stirling County.  Saturday then sees home-and-away league fixtures against East Kilbride, NVT Shawholm travelling to Torrance House, NVT Poloc hosting East Kilbride at home.  Four games in two days then becomes six [Ed: and maybe seven!] in three as NVT Poloc go to Meikleriggs on Sunday in the new WDCU CSL40 Cup, and an Under 19s side competes in the Frank Smith Trophy Finals Day.  Teams for Wednesday's rescheduled West League Cup match, and Saturday's league games are online.  Friday's junior teams will be selected after junior practices tomorrow.

Panthers lose to Victoria [posted 21/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The Panthers' 2013 season finally got underway tonight with a home Glasgow Cup group stage match against Victoria.  And let's just say it wasn't pretty.  Not the night itself - it was spectacularly pleasant for a change.  It was just the cric' that poor.  Both innings!  In the first the Panthers posted 86 for 9 thanks almost entirely to 32 gifted in wides by Victoria, an effort that turned this T20 into more like a T25.2.  Then in the second, and adding to their careless batting in the first half, the Panthers' bowling was loose enough to see the target they'd set chased down inside thirteen overs.  Smash, bang, wallop.  Thank you, and goodnight.  We've a match report online, as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

Another two wins out of two [posted 20/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

After the two wins recorded by the Under 11s and Under 15s on Friday [Ed: before the monsoons!] tonight it was the turn of the Under 13s and Under 19s to see if they could successfully tag team to a double win.  The good news is they did.  In the 3rd/4th place play-off match in the Under 13 League Cup, the 13s saw off the challenge of Ayr in a low-scoring game at Shawholm, whilst the Under 19s were also playing Ayrshire opposition, in their case Prestwick down at the Henry Thow Oval.

And they too secured the win, and by doing so also booked their place in the Finals Day of the 2012 Frank Smith Trophy.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

The Under 11s and Under 15s both won this evening as junior league cricket was played in - ssssh now, whisper it - warm and sunny weather!  At Shawholm the [still very] young Under 11s beat their northside counterparts from West of Scotland by 58 runs, whilst the Under 15s travelled to Glenpark, Greenock, and returned with the win points courtesy of a 55-run win.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

Under 13Bs lose in Burns country [posted 15/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13Bs were the only players in action tonight after a "mirror" Under 15B match against Ayr at home was cancelled.  The 13Bs' game at New Cambusdoon did, however, beat the weather.  And though the square was still pretty soft, the ground in Alloway was perfectly playable for the guys.  Batting first, the 13Bs posted a decent-enough net 86, being 96 for 2 (under the pairs cricket rules).

Extras - with 48 - were the [usual] top scorer with 2 runs for wides and no balls, but the fact that all the batters played straight was encouraging nonetheless, only losing a couple of wickets reflecting this.  However, victory would be denied the youngsters as bowling that was generally too short was punished by the home side batters.  And so despite losing seven wickets, Ayr ran out winners by 36 runs.  A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Under 15s off-and-running [posted 10/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 15s got their season up-and-running tonight, with the Ferguslie|Kelburne combined side making the trip the southside.  The first innings was played in pretty steady - but light - drizzle making the ball take on a soap-like quality!  That said, some poor bowling by the 15s allowed the Paisley youngsters to post 123 for 6, with Taimor Ahmed impressing with abn unbeaten 62 from 49 balls.  In reply the 'Locster batters, too, played well, Owais anchoring the successful run-chase with a controlled 69 not out from 48 deliveries.  He was backed up by 28 not out (32 ballas) from Lewis as the 15s ran out winners by nine wickets with over five overs in hand.  A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Empire rebuffs Rebel Alliance [posted 08/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The occasion was the first group stage match in this season's West League Cup, and the venue was Toytown. Yup, the first us-against-them, Evil Empire versus Rebel Alliance, good guys versus baddies - you name it dear reader - of a new season. And once the dust had settled [Ed: dust would've been a fine thing, pardon the pub, more like once the damp had risen] it was the Empire who were the victors in this latest southside skirmish in Crossmyloof. 104 for 7 was 17 runs too many as the 'Loc finished 87 for 6 to see the Dark Side take the 2 win points.

We've a match report online [Ed: 'Dale readers can compare to theirs in a few days time when it makes it online at www.bestteamincrossmyloof.com], as well as updated stat's and the scorecard of the game.

13s continue their winning run in the League Cup [posted 06/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

Tonight saw the second round of Under 13 League Cup matches.  The 13s were down on the Ayrshire coast taking on Prestwick.  Prestwick had lost on matchday one to near neighbours Ayr, whilst the 'Locsters had beaten the Weirs|Hillhead combo side.  Tonight's encounter looked, on paper, to be a close one.  However such pre-match predictions would end up looking as smart as a Delorean shareholder as the 13s romped to victory, posting 108 for 2 before skittling their hosts for just 29 inside eight overs.  Extraordinary.  A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

That's better x2 [posted 04/05/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

After the disappointing performances of their first two Scottish Cup group stage matches, the 'Loc found some in a well-deserved win in the third round of matches in the competition, with a 102-run win at Kirkhill over Penicuik.  Batting first, the top order frailties of the first two weeks of the season were cast aside as a 66-run first wicket partnership from Pasty and Euan gave the side a good base.  Carly, coming in a three this week, then batted through for an unbeaten 72 with a number of cameos around about him.  Matty's 32 was the pick of these.  Then in the second innings, Rusty's "4-for" and NJ's "3-for" were the pick of the bowling figures.  Meanwhile, back at the old ground, the 'Holmboys continued their good form with a nine-wicket win over Bute County.

After skittling the islanders for 92, the guys reached their target in 21 overs, with Rosco (34*) and Doogie (29*) seeing their side home.  Saqi' was the pick of the bowlers with a "4-for" to match Rusty's.  There are match report online (here), match scorecard (here) and updated stat's

13Bs get season off to a winning start [posted 01/05/13]

WDJCU_logo

After the Under 13s won in the League Cup on Monday night, it was their cousins, the 13Bs, who were in action this evening down at Scott Ellis Playing Field in Kilmarnock.  And just as on Monday the pleasing end result was a convincing win.  After putting the home side in to bat, the 13Bs' bowlers restricted the Killie batters to just 37 for 5, or net 12 under the Under 13B "pairs cricket" scoring system.  Then, in the second innings, the Locsters rattled up 163 for 1, or net 158 to record a thumping victory.

Stand-outs on the night were the number of wides conceded by Kilmarnock - 44 - and CJ's sixteen-ball unbeaten 54 that included seven 4s and three 6s.  Boom!  A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Abtaha plays against Japan [posted 01/05/13]

Scottish_Wildcats_logo

After playing the Weirs|Hillhead combo side on Monday in the Under 13 League Cup, today Abtaha Maqsood was playing for Scotland Women's Wildcats side against the touring Japanese women's side, in Glasgow.  In fact she was playing two matches, both T20s, part of a tour by both Japan's men's and women's squads to the UK.  The Wildcats lost today's first game, Japan chasing their target inside sixteen overs.

Abtaha didn't bat as the Wildcats struggled to post 66 for 7 batting first, but took two of the visiting side's wickets to fall in the second innings returning figures of 4-1-24-2, both victims - Miyaji and Sakamoto - being clean bowled.  The 'card of the game's online here.  Then in the second match fortunes were reversed as the Japanese batted first and struggled to 70 for 6, a target the Scots women chased down in 17.1 overs.  Abtaha again bowled well, this time returning figures of 4-0-19-1.  The 'card of the second game's available to view online too, here

Early season woes continue [posted 27/04/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

Last Saturday's Scottish Cup defeat at Ayr was still fresh in the memory as the 'Loc players took to the field today in their second round robin group stage match against Stoneywood-Dyce at Shawholm.  98 all out at New Cambusdoon wasn't a great start, but it now looks a top effort after today's 50 all out!    Again asked to bat first, the 'Loc were 8 for 5 in the eighth over, and despite something of a recovery to 27 for 6, were skittled out for 50 inside twenty overs.  Not to be outdone however, the visitors from the north-east then slumped to 13 for 3 themselves as the tricky deck took its toll.  However, and notwithstanding a few other minor alarms for the Eastern Premier Division side's batters, Stoneywood-Dyce reached their target inside nine overs to record a seven-wicket win.  Ouch!  There are match report online (here), match scorecard (here) and updated stat's.

Next week sees the third round of matches and the 'Loc travel to Kirkhill to take on Penicuik, the borders side also having played two, lost two in the competition, losing to Ayr today by 105 runs.

No_parking_cone

The General Committee met last night at the club and agreed to remind members that cars should be only be parked in the main car park, and not behind the clubhouse at the back door to the club and entrance to the Cricket Professional's house.  The reasons for this include the obvious such as congestion, but also - and more importantly - the facilitating of entry and exit to and from the groundsman's garage of ground machinery, access for delivery and refuse collection vehicles, and to enable emergency services ease of access to the club and/or ground if ever required.  The only cars to be parked in the small rear car park are, therefore, those belonging to people living in the house, or their visitors.

Win and a loss on opening Saturday! [posted 20/04/13]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2013

Season 2013 got underway today with home and away cup clashes with Ayr.  At New Cambusdoon, the 'Loc never really recovered from a bad start batting first against Ayr in the Scottish Cup, eventually being skittled out for just 98.  In reply the home side got home for the loss of only two wickets - one each for Mikey and NJ - in just over 30 overs.  At Shawholm the result was the other way round, though it was the side chasing that won again.  Set 161 to beat Cambusdoon, the 'Holmboys got their Western Cup campaign off to a winning start, getting home with a couple of overs to spare.  There were runs for Lexy (38*), and Wills Robinson on debut made 29 and grabbed a "4-for".  Also in the wickets was Hari' with a "3-for".

Fred Haw [posted 03/04/13]

The club was saddened to hear, this morning, of the passing of Fred Haw.  The thoughts, and condolences, of everyone at the club are with Fred's family at this time.  John Thompson, who knew him well, remembered Fred, saying "Fred would have been a member of the club continuously from 1956, and played up to 1971 when he moved to Wemyss Bay (on his marriage, but continuing his membership as a non-player).  During his playing days he captained firstly the Shawholm XI (as the 3rd XI was called at that time) then the 2nd XI.  He also served the club as Treasurer.  After his marriage he played for Greenock in both 1st and 2nd XIs, captaining the latter.  He served as Treasurer at Glenpark also, and was Club President.  A fast-medium opening bowler and an enthusiastic fielder and batsman (in that order), he was also a shrewd Captain, who above all things believed cricket was to be enjoyed, especially after the game!"

A big thank you to everyone who came to the club after practice today and helped get everything prepared for the start of the new season.  Cold though it was the nets got put onto the two mobile cages, the nets were re-hung on the astro-turf net bays, the bays were rolled with the wee roller, the square was given a cut, the practice square was similarly shaved, the covers were put on to the mobile covers, the sightscreens were moved back on to the outfield, and the ground was cleared of any remnant of debris after the scarification of the outfield.  Great stuff!  To name names: thanks to CJ, Lewis, DJ, Rusty, Euan, Scotty, Anjum, Uzzair, Owais, Muscles, Saqui', Stiffy, Stuart, Coya, Pasty, Rosco, Cammy, Youngy, Flanners and Les'.  #manyhandsmakelightwork was the hashtag used, and so it proved!

Ground preparation days [posted 28/03/13]

The first ground preparation day is this Sunday - the 31st of March - from 3.30pm.  Players who are netting at "Hutchie" between 1pm and 3pm are asked to then go on to the ground where we'll be bringing out sightscreens, putting covers on the mobile covers, netting on the net bays, marking the wickets, clearing sticks and branches from the outfield, etc. all in preparation for the start of ground-preparation proper for the new season.  All weather-permitting of course.  As ever everyone - young and old - is asked to come along because, quite literally, many hands make light work.  It's our club, your ground, let's everyone get along a pitch in.  3.30pm at Shawholm on Sunday.  The clubhouse will be open for refreshments and tea breaks too!

Golf Section AGM [posted 23/03/13]

Today saw the Golf Section AGM.  The usual admin' was attended to and gongs handed out.  That is except for the Club Champion's Maynard Quaich which, given the weekend's snow, hasn't got a winner as yet.  The snow-covered policies put paid to Finals Day, with golfers having to comfort themselves with some bonhomie in the warmth of the clubhouse.  The election of office bearers at the AGM saw Stephen Brown take on the section captaincy for season 2013-14, taking over the hot seat from outgoing skipper Jimmy Duncanson.

Captain's Prizes [posted 23/02/13]

Ian Adshead romped to victory in today's Captain's Prizes golf competition, his net 60 (!) proving too good for the rest of the field.  Bean's net 63 represented the nearest challenge to Adsy, and was enough to see him secure the Somerville Shield - the winner of which is the player with the best gross scores in the Vice-Captain's and Captain's Prizes.  Elsewhere on the course, Youngy crashed out of the Maynard Quaich, as Mr Sheridan secured a semi-final berth.

Saturday golf results [posted 09/02/13]

There were Maynard Quaich ties played today, along with the Stableford competition.  Charlie McBride beat Stevo to progress in the club championship, the winning margin 2 up.  In the other tie completed, Youngy came back from four down after six to beat Spenny at the first extra hole, this after the latter somehow three-putted from three feet on the 18th to take the game into sudden death.  In the Stableford, Youngy also took home the loot with 32 points.

Cricket Scotland published the detailed fixtures for this year's Scottish Cup this morning.  After knowing we were in Group B along with Ayr, Penicuik and Stoneywood-Dyce, today's fixture schedule puts dates to each of the six group stage matches.  Game one sees the club travel to Burns Country to take on Ayr at New Cambusdoon on the 20th of April [Ed: game off!], with the first home tie being Stoneywood-Dyce's visit to Shawholm seven days later on the 27th.  The final match of the first set of three is the trip to Kirkhill to play Penicuik on the first Saturday in May.  The full draw's online too, as is the listing of the 'Loc's group matches.

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Glenton Stuurman, last year's "Overseas Amateur" player from South West Districts ("SWD") in South Africa.  Glenton, back playing at SWD, has been involved in a bad motorbike accident and thinks he'll be out of action for six months.  This makes it unlikely Glenton will be able to return to the club this season as he, and we, had hoped.
