Schools coaching

The club has been providing cricket coaching in its local community under the auspices of the "Community Coaching Initiative" since 2002.  Working with Glasgow Council (now Culture & Sport Glasgow) a pilot scheme was run in two local schools and, since then, the Initiative has grown each year so that, in 2006, nine local schools took part.  The core part of the coaching carried out in schools is weekly sessions carried out by the club's coaches at the schools.

2007 saw further growth and development with Richmond Park [Primary] School - a school for youngsters with physical impairment - joining the initiative and youngsters there enjoying cricket for the first time.  Then in 2008 coaching courses were provided for the first time the High School of Glasgow and Shawlands Academy, with Annette Street Primary enjoying a day's cricket at the club's ground in June.  The 2009 programme saw five primary schools and three secondary schools involved - another full programme - with 2010's schedule being further expanded to include five new primaries.

Cricket festival days

The culmination of each year's primary schools coaching is a festival day at Shawholm that sees the schools competing against each other.  2010's inter-school competition was on Wednesday June the 16th.  In addition, the club, under the umbrella of the Initiative and in partnership with the WDJCU, regularly hosts "Kwik Cricket" festivals - the 'Loc's 2010 Under 10 festival was on Sunday, June the 27th.

Community coaching

In addition to the work in local schools, the club's Community Coaching Initiative also works with other community groups in providing sports coaching in and around the club's locality.  Most often this work is part of a larger initiative being carried out in the community.  Examples have included work with Pollokshaws Settlement and Integration Network and the Ibrox Cluster's "Community Sports Club".  Easter 2009 saw the Initiative providing coaching to Culture & Sport Glasgow as part of its city-wide programme of activities.

Funders

The Community Coaching Initiative is only possible because of the ongoing generous financial support of a number of local charities, trusts and companies.  A full list of the Initiative's supporters can be found on the Sponsors and partners page of the website - the club is enormously grateful for their support, support that means there is absolutely no charge made to any youngster when attending an Initiative event.

More information about the initiative and its work can be provided - to find out more, please contact Keith Young whose contact details are on the Contact us page of the website.

Community Coaching Initiative staff

All the work of the initiative is carried out by appropriately qualified coaching staff with the assistance of appropriately supervised coaching assistants.  All coaches have been appropriately "Disclosure Scotland" checked and the Initiative's work is carried on as an integral part of the club's youth activities, recognised by Cricket Scotland's "TOPClub" accreditation.  Further recognition, this time from Culture & Sport Glasgow, is reflected in its awarding the club's development work "Clubmark" status.
